I can confirm that "Chimera" was indeed shown as three part mini-series on TV sometime in the early 1990's.

At the time, for kids of a certain age, it was the best thing to talk about in the playground on Monday morning. Although I remember it being rather scary, in retrospect, with the help of the condensed and edited version (which is what this imdb entry is), I find it was actually a fairly well made but ultimately forgettable one-off from ITV.

A shame really, as those final moments from episode two, where the children who help hide the eponymous Monkey-Boy and in unison they say "Mr. Scarecrow", still haunt me.

I remember watching it on TV in several parts too, I was about 9 or 10 in 1991, and we were on holiday in Wales when it was on. I don't remember a huge amount of detail about the show except the very basic storyline, but I do remember watching it (same thing happened with Twin Peaks, lol). @.@

I second that matt, i was about 8 or 9 when i watched it. I cant remember much only the ending and a ward full of hairy babies. I have been begging ITV for ages asking them to show it again. I also hear Paul O'Grady has a small part in it. So long ago i cant remember who he played. I think i missed the first episode but it still sends a shiver down my back thinling of the old barn and the children. Hope they do release it on DVD im keeping my fingers crossed.

that would be great, who does roy cropper play?

I also saw this when I was about 11-12 years old, and I remember it being creepy. The only image that I can really recall is that of the weird creature huddled in an old barn.
I wish this would get a DVD release, as I think many would buy it.. I remember people talking about it years ago so it must've been popular.

I've only seen the severely condensed American version of this called "Monkey Boy" on VHS. I would love to see the complete mini-series. I keep hoping someone would put this out on Region 1 DVD already.

Q: What's the biggest room in the world? A: The room for improvement.

Roy Cropper plays the father of the kids! I was shocked to see him, too, when I saw the video recently.

I was 8 or 9 when this came out & don't really remember much about it except that it scared the bejesus outta me (Theres a vague memory of hiding behind the couch).

Is is still scary now or is it like a lame horror? xx

You know me, I'm not one to gossip but you'll never guess what I heard...

reply

Well watching over ten years later as a adult, its obviously not as scary BUT as other people have said there is still lots of tension, such as the farm attack scenes, and the effects still hold up pretty well.

I would like to rewatch the complete series rather than the chopped video verion i got my hands on

Great and what an improvement the full series is to the edited version!

Like most of you, I remember Chimera creeping me out back in the '90s when I watched it as a kid, but I bought the video not that long ago, and I have to say, I didn't find it that creepy at all. In fact, it looked a bit shoddy. The idea still gets under my skin, though, and the kids calling him "Mr Scarecrow" is strangely unnerving.

I was 10 when this came out on TV. My gran went to bed as she wasn't a huge horror fan. And I was told to go to my room as it was too scary. But I went into my parent's room and watched it in there and it scared the holy poop out of me! Can't remember an awful lot about it - just the monkey-man!

Fantastic ! I remember episode 1 being shown in June 1991 - it was when I was in the middle of a holiday in Cornwall. My Wife and I sat down and watched the events unfold as nurse Tracy Pickford went to work in the sinister Jenner Clinic. The ending was such a shock ! Something went absolutely loopy and started killing everyone. As you saw more and more bodies, you then saw Jenner himself slumped over his desk dead. Then as a final shock, Tracy herself gets killed and her body dumped alongside all the other Jenner Clinic staff. It was so unusual to become acquainted with who we thought was the lead character only to find her brutally murdered at the climax of the first of four episodes. Few other dramas have delivered that kind of shock. The episode made such an impact that I poured over the Daily Mail review next day and I can still remember today exactly where we went the dayafter it was shown, such was the power of the drama.

It has to be said that the next three episodes did not quite come up to the same high standard with the enigmatic Hennessey taking charge of operations and the John Lynch character taking centre stage.

Several years later I bought the Video and was extremely disappointed to find that episode one had been completely chopped thus losing all the suspense. I have subsequently managed to obtain a good quality recording of the complete episodes which is much more satisfying.

Well-acted programmes/films can often have a real impact like that.

That first episode is my clearest memory too, as everyone gets slaughtered and the nurse is all on her own...only to get killed too. I haven't see the production since but I have several clear images and moments in my mind like that.

Like a lot of horror though, when you finally can see the monster walking around, the whole thing becomes a lot less creepy. I seem to remember finding the other three episodes a bit dull with a really creaky old cliche ending, but I do remember that first one.
