Heartwrenching memory

*Spoiler warning for those who haven't seen this film*:

I saw this when it was shown back in '92. The scene in the jailcell where the boy can't read or write and is convinced to sign an 'X' on the confession sheet just in order to be fed breaks my heart. Thinking of that scene still tears me up inside.

Yes indeed. Plus the execution scene is so heartbreaking I can hardly bear to watch it. I saw this movie on tv in the early '90s and bought it on dvd about a year ago. It was about 6 months before I could bring myself to watch it.

The worst of it is that the novel is actually based on a true life case of a fourteen year old black youth executed for the murder of 2 white girls. His name has never been officially cleared but it seems, like Linus Bragg he couldn't physically have committed the crime.

A very well acted movie but extremely harrowing.

I caught this on cable in the 90s, and it is one of the movies I remember to this day. Such a nightmare of justice...

What hit me hardest was how he clung to his bible whilst being led to the chair, then the straps were too long to secure his arms, so they tied them with a knot instead of using the buckles, which promptly came undone as the electric jolted his body. Great acting from the kid, who looked absolutely terrified throughout.
VERY hard hitting!
