Leigh Bowden'a Lipstick Moment

There's a bit around the middle of the film where Leigh gets up during the night and starts to make herself up, with emphasis on the lipstick. When she has to wake Sam up she makes an effort to hide the lipstick... Anyone have any idea why? Was she off to meet someone in her own affair? I presume they cut a relating scene but not sure...

that scene has always befuddled me

I think she's sort of fantasizing about her own sexuality and lost youth and probably adultery as well. Then she feels embarrassed about it later and hides it.

When AMC did the DVD on TV thing, which was like Pop up Video throughout the whole movie, it's explained that the woman who played her explained that she feels like she's going on a date and getting ready. Never made much sense to me but there it is.

Leigh, a dissatisfied wife, is fantasizing about being desired by someone else.

I found it very odd too.

Indeed it is a subtle suggestion - something that a viewer who needs every little thing spelled out for them wouldn't catch.
