An average rating of 6.6?? Wow, this movie is way better than that. The performances are top notch all around (was the best ensemble of 1991 imo), the screenplay is well constructed with great dialogue, and the production values are completely engrossing. Another superb score by Morricone too.
I wholeheartedly agree with you. Bugsy is a small masterpiece, one of the last surviving remnants of classic film-making. Beautiful photography and direction. Awe-inspiring score by Morricone that adds emotion and a sense of class to the film. Beatty in his greatest role and greatest performance here. Bening has never looked more beautiful and her great chemistry with Beatty is highly evident. The entire supporting cast did their job great, from Kingsley to Keitel to Gould.
While the film does have a few flaws, I still regard it as a classic, and as a hommage to the old 30's and 40's crime films it accomplishes the job beautifully. It's a shame this film isn't more well-known and is under-appreciated. It doesn't matter though, the ones who watched it and saw the beauty in it, loved it as well.
ill have to agree yes the cast was great top notch even but it wasint accurate in telling bugsys personal life and i feel beatty was miscast to bad mickey rourke wasint choosen but thats his own fault so ill have stick with warren.
Yes its true Bugsy is a highly entertaining movie, which I own on dvd.But thats all it is entertainment .For instance the cast was all wrong Warren Beatty as Bugsy ,looks nothing like the real Bugsy did ,not to mention he was too old , Bugsy, was 41when he was shot.Annette Benning as Virginia Hill, please Virginia Hill was from Alabama, were was the accent.Harvey Keitel as Mickey Cohen, looked like him but also too old.Mickey Cohen was 37 when Bugsy was shot. Also Bugsy did not meet Mickey in L A they went there together.Joe Mantegna as George Raft too stocky.Ben Kingsley as Meyer Lansky that was right on the money.NOw for the Gangsters in the background, they have the Characterof Frank Costello as a basically an idiot, highly untrue,Frank was a very shrewd man who was known as the Prime minister of the underworld due to the fact he willed and dealed with alot of politicians or bigwigs.Example Joe Kennedy.Don't believe me look it up.Like I said in the beginning entertaining movie, but to learn about the real Bugsy I suggest reading about him
Great acting, great story, great (absolutely beautiful) cinematography, great score. . .great, great movie!
Actually, if I were to have any influence on the Oscars of 91-92, I would have given this film Best Picture (or JFK) over SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. In addition, Keitel would have won.
It's a good movie, not great. I'd say it's rated about right. I believe the character of Bugsy is an extension of Warren Beatty's ego, he's not a murderer like Bugsy was, just a blow-hard.
I think it is a terrific film. Very few movies of Beatty's that I can sit through. The only ones are "Bugsy" and "Bonnie And Clyde". He has never been more forceful on the screen. I am not a particularly big fan of director Barry Levinson's work. This and "Rain Man" are his best films but for every good film he does there is crap like "Sphere" and "Wag The Dog".
