Did the guy who offers George work have any connection to the Art (Burt Young's character)? What do you think we're supposed to take away from the final shot of George in the back of the truck?

Nah...he was just a boss looking for a tough guy to do tough work.

I took the final shot of George riding in the back of the truck going off to possibly his first real job as the moment when George realizes that he has his own life to lead, and has other options open besides remaining embroiled in other peoples' dramas.
