Violence?

I have not seen this yet and wondered if someone can describe to me if this
film is violent or not. Can someone elaborate? Thanks!

reply

Some violence and cruelty.

Beresford hints at the terrible tortures inflicted by all the natives on their captives and especially upon Jesuit missionaries. Research the life of Father Isaac Jogues for example.

The descendants of the people potrayed in "Black Robe" still live in Quebec (people with ancient native names are listed in the credits), New England and New York. And some of us have moved on. When I watch this movie with the scenes of that northern winter I can still feel the quiet of the snowbound woods and smell that crisp frigid air. That is something that will never leave me I imagine.

"Black Robe" is very authentic.

reply

Thanks for that. Is it worht renting?

reply

Yes, very much so. It is not, however, like "Lawrence of the Plains" ("Dances With Wolves") but a much more realistic portrayal of the clash between the native tribes and the europeans.

About "DWW", I know a lot of people like that movie and Hollywierd just sh!t themselves over it but it really is a crock of B.S. The most authentic scene in the movie was the buffalo hunt.

reply

It's not worth renting. You should own it, TiVo it but definitely have it. Watch it once for proof.

Compare the contemporary "Dances With Wolves" and you'l gladly swap.

Violent? Nowhere near the real thing. Great humor for the Iroqous was to stake a man, dis-embowel him him and roast his still connected entrails in fire laughing all the while. Hanging a scalped man head down in fire was another great amusement. Those 'noble savages' knew how to have fun!

I don't think it's that violent. But the book is certainly both violent and pornographic. Well, maybe not that pornographic but since I was reading it as a virginal teenager it opened my eyes.

Are you no longer a virginal teenage?

reply

No longer a teenager. I'd like to think myself virginal though. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I've often been told that virginity is a state of mind. I've always considered it an affliction...

Like a woman I saw wearing a t-shirt with "I am a virgin" on the front & "this is a very old shirt" on the back.
