Rudiger Vogler

I notice that in this film, his character shares the name of Vogler's character in Alice in the Cities. Is it just a coincidence, or is he supposed to be the same guy?

reply

Yes, he is. Wenders has resurrected this character (Philip Winter) numerous times through numerous movies.

check this link as it is the cannon on this subject:

Thanks for the link :)
I heard somewhere that Vogler's characters in the 'road movie trilogy' (alice, wrong move, kings of the road) were supposed to be the one character in a sense, even though he has different names in the three films.

The idea of him being a Wenders alter ego is an interesting one.

To all UTEOTW/Wenders/Vogler fans I enthusiastically recommend Lisbon Story (1994)
http://imdb.com/title/tt0110361/

In it Vogler reprises his Winter role once again, this time as a cinema sound man searching for his friend Friedrich, a director, who disappeared in Lisbon under mysterious circumstances.

Here we get two alter egos of Wenders, each arguing the philosophical and artistic points of modern cinema (or the failure thereof). No, it's not as dull as I just made it sound ;) It's a very charming and beautifully shot film. With a gorgeous soundtrack.

I really liked Vogler and his character, Winter. He should be a bigger star. Of course, this movie was made almost three decades ago. He must be in his mid to late seventies by now, if he's still around.
