The version for the movie is different from the one availible on Peter Gabriel's album "US". The film's version is not on the soundtrack CD but can be found on a CD single.

Is it the UK version of the CD single?

reply

Yes. I picked it up through eil.com.

i've heard that it's not in the german director's cut. is that true? cause that would be tragic-- it's one of my favorite parts of the film.

The Director's Cut has it, but it's placed differently.

In the original theatrical version, the satellite explodes, Claire says "It's the end of the world", and the song begins as the plane drifts back down while she's looking out the window (and many miles away, Eugene is looking up to the sky)... there is no dialogue for the next 4 mins while the song plays.

In the director's cut, the satellite explodes, Claire says her line, but then we get a few extra scenes of Winter, Eugene & Chico arguing with each other before the camera cuts back to the plane landing. Claire & Sam get out and start walking across the desert. Then the song starts.

I much prefer the theatrical version (song starts in mid air, no extra scenes) because it really emphasizes the desolation as soon as the satellite explodes. That plus the beautiful song really gives you a sad feeling as Claire looks out the window. You feel as if they're about to die. The theatrical version is probably my favourite scene in cinema.
