Absolutely Blu-Ray is needed, but there's so many versions of this film...I myself own 3 different variations. Bringing it to home video would be a total nightmare...even for Criterion.

I recommend the 3 DVD director's cut of this film (if you can handle french without subtitles). The extra footage and extra storyline is well worth it (you find out why she calls the guy "Broken Ladder" for instance, and you get to see aboriginal children playing with fire, which is awesome!)

Criterion released "Wings of Desire" and "Paris, Texas" on Blu.

I hope they (or anyone else for that matter) also release "Until the End of the World" (DC) and "Don't Come Knocking".

I would buy this on BluRay in a heartbeat. All the crap they release but not this classic. WTF?

Looks like something could happen soon as the film's Director's Cut (as well as a handful of Wenders' earlier ones) has just been re-scanned and remastered in 4K for the 2015 Berlin Film Festival. It will be screened there in digital 4K and after that, it shouldn't be a problem to release a super-crisp HD version on blu-ray…

I wrote the Wim Wenders Foundation to ask if there are any plans to release this on Blu-Ray. I'll let you know if I get a response.

The Wim Wenders Foundation forwarded my email to Janus Films, which is the US distributor. I received the following email from Janus:

"Until the End of the World is currently touring in theaters. It's not on our home media schedule at this point in time but please keep checking back for further information."

On Janus' website, they have a special section for Wenders, including this page about the restorations:

It would seem that the legal rights which have plagued "Until the End of the World" for years have finally been resolved. The film is currently part of a Wenders retrospective tour of multiple titles. My guess is once the tour is over, they will begin working on releasing them on Blu-Ray/DVD.

Actually it's news to me that UTEOTW is touring in theaters. But if the legal issues are sorted out, that's a step in the right direction. My big question, which I probably won't like the answer to, is will they give us the full 4.5 hour version AS WELL AS the theatrical (VHS) release? There are a few scenes on the short version that I really liked which were edited differently in the 4.5 hour version. Such as the moment the satellite is shot down, in the short version we get Peter Gabriel's song "Blood of Eden" uninterrupted, without any dialogue as the plane crashes and they trek through the desert. It's one of my favorite scenes in all of cinema.

Thank you, thank you, thank you SO MUCH for mentioning the retrospective tour! I checked the Janus website on a lark and the retrospective is going on right now here in Portland, OR at the NW Film Center.

They're showing the movies in chronological order, so I've already missed everything before Wings of Desire (which is tomorrow, and I'll probably skip it), but Until the End of the World Director's Cut isn't until April 2nd and I definitely grabbed tickets for that. I would have missed this showing if not for you, you're the best.

I just saw the 5-hour director's cut on the big screen, as part of a Wim Wenders road film festival in Buffalo, New York (of all places).

Before the screening, it was announced that the film would indeed be released through Criterion in 2017...
