I don't think it's the same one.
In this movie the dog, Bingo, runs away from the circus and comes across the boy, Chuckie, who's face down in the river after a bike accident. Bingo drags Chuckie out, sets up a tent and resuscitates him. They are attacked by a bear but Bingo has caught a fish and barks at Chuckie and then Chuckie throws the fish to the bear.
In another part Bingo hides from Chuckie in a bin and Chuckie yells at him as he thinks Bingo was lost and was all stressed but then apologises for yelling. That was the only part where the boy was mean to the dog.
The boy does have a nightmare. The sequence starts with Bingo having sniffed his nose out and has t have it replaced. He was sniffing as he and Chuckie were separated and he was tracking him. Anyway, he goes into surgery but the only nose size they have left is Doberman but they put it on anyway. It then cuts to Chuckie's bedroom with him waking from a nightmare. It appears Bingo's surgery was telepathically transmitted to Chuckie's dream. Then his mum walks in and says "No more chainsaw movies before bedtime".
This movie is sort of a parody of Lassie and other such hero dog programmes.
