Luciano taken for a ride?

I saw this one in the theatre many years ago and just caught it again on tv, but missed about the first third and some patches later on. There's one thing I wanted to confirm: doesn't Luciano, at some point around the middle of the film, get picked up by rival gangsters, get beaten severely and wind up dumped by the roadside in Staten Island? I know I've seen that in some film and always thought it was BB. Later on I read The Last Testament of Lucky Luciano, reportedly based on Luciano's own retelling of his career to film producer Martin Gosch, an amazing book, revealing, insightful and howlingly funny, and realized the famous incident had actually happened in 1929, instigated by old Mob godfather Don Maranzano, though it's likely been changed a bit in the film. Is the "taken for a ride" incident in Bathgate, and if so, who were the guys that assaulted Luciano in the film, and for what reasons?

You are a lunatic, Sir, and you're going to end up on the Russian front. I have a car waiting.

The scene you are thinking of was in the film "Mobsters" with Christian Slater. It came out the same year as Billy Bathgate, as did Bugsy, so it was kind of the year of the mobster in theaters.

Luciano is barely in this film for a total of ten minutes but he is important to the plot.
