Why different actresses?

I'm curious why they used different actresses for the princesses. This movie was made just two years after the original.

Well the most obvious answer is that they didn't want to do it.

In this case the most obvious answer is the wrong one.

From an interview with Diane Franklin on Retro Junk:

Q: Why didn't you come back for "Bill And Ted's Bogus Journey"?

A: Good question. I would love to find out. Kim and I were considered for the roles, but not selected.

If you look on YouTube there's an interview with Kim Kates (LaBelle) where she discusses how both she and Diane wanted to be in Bogus Journey, they'd already been given the shooting dates and seemed set to go. She thought they were doing it until she ran into a then unknown Leah Remini who told Kim she had gone into audition for one of the princesses that day, and that's how she found out they were going with new actresses. She thinks the reason why is because the director of Bogus Journey was a Brit and he wasn't buying their British accents so he recast. I don't know if both of the new actresses were Brits, but I know one was.

So it appears they both wanted to be in the sequel, Kim even called getting replaced "crushing" and said it made her question whether she even wanted to stay in the business. They wanted the role, and thought they had it, but the powers that be replaced them for whatever reason.

I sure wish they'd kept the same actresses as I hate new ones that screw up the continuity, the original ones were better looking as well.
