Bernard in Richard Curtis Screenplays

I read that Richard Curtis used to go out with a girl who cheated on him with a guy called Bernard, so in each of his screenplays he has a character who is generally unpopular by the name of Bernard (Four Weddings and a Funeral he is seen as a bit of an arse, Love Actually he is Emma Thompson's 'horrid son'etc). I guess this Bernard is a bit downtrodden, but I wouldn't say he is unpopular!

My friends have a cat that was part of a litter of kittens born to a cat belonging to Richard Curtis.

Their cat's name is Bernard.
