Boxing Week blues

To get over my chagrin at vacation plans that fizzled, I've been binge-watching Rivette films. Started with L'histoire de Marie et Julien, continued with Le pont du Nord, then Secret Defense and this morning La belle noiseuse: Divertimento. This film is so fascinating and the actors do a great job. Beart is probably at her finest as the bored girlfriend of the young painter, Birkin is really strong as Frenhofer's wife, worried about her husband's future in the art world. Piccoli impresses me very much, his hesitation replaced by certainty that he's finally made a breakthrough in his painting.

I find that Rivette can give you hope for the future. His uncertainty leads to certainty within me--if that makes any sense.
