Its supposed to be the director's idea of God, Religion, and Salvation. I got my copy at BestBuy and I believe you can order it from them online if it is not available in store.

You can rent it on Netflix.

Hmmm - what is it? Good question. Its been some time since i watched this little nightmare, but based on the "characters" listed in the credits, it seems to be a visual interpretation of the life of Jesus Christ.

The opening is the nasty "god killing himself", and then the mother earth character apparently (sexual reference deleted) and then self inserting his sperm into herself. Next: the pregnancy and the birth of "flesh". I have debated whether this is actually the birth of man, or the "man/god" Jesus, but i guess there could be argument for both. Sticking with the Jesus theory, the rest of the film seems to then deal with the raping and destruction of mother earth, and the persecution and murder of the Jesus/flesh character. He eventually is pulverized and returned to the ground/earth. I look at these persecutors as the men that denied and executed jesus. They are mindless animals that ignore what is around them and destroy without mercy.

If anything the visuals of this film are wonderful and beautiful to watch, but the subject matter being shot, and the meaning behind that subject matter is something entirely different. Getting past the violence and semi-pornographic images, i think there is something to get out of this film... but what that something is, is surely debatable.

It's as though an ancient tribe of aboriginals decided to film their own Creation Myth with the tools they had at the time. The images were captured on some kind of papyrus-based film stock, then the reels were hidden away in a cave ... only to be discovered thousands of years later by Elias Merhige.

I agree with the jesus theory, the title 'Begotten' is a biblical reference. I went to a christian elementary school and i remember a verse, 'God gave his only begotten son'. It is about the rise and fall of man, shadowed by biblical references imo.

I disagree. They are very ugly and dirty visuals. This was an interesting effort, but not for a full length film. The first 15-20 minutes of the presentation were intriguing to me, but then just seemed annoying and very difficult to follow. As a 15-20 piece - which I strongly believed it could have been edited into, I think this would be a very interesting short.

For a much, much better representation of life and death, I suggest sticking with The Seventh Seal.
