The first time

How did you all first find out about "Begotten"? For me it was a flier I received at a movie theatre I went to about 12 years ago. This theatre was showing the movie as a midnight feature, but unforunately I didn't get to see it, and it wasn't available on home video at the time. Flash forward to 2005. My interest in "Begotten" was renewed because of "Sin City", of all things. What's the connection, you ask? Well, after seeing that movie, I was trying to think of all the black-and-white films made in the last 30 years or so, and "Begotten" came to mind. And like "Sin City", "Begotten" has a unique look, which is what I first heard about the movie and why I wanted to see it in the first place. I then came to this message board and found out that it had been released on DVD, and fortunately I found a video store that has a copy of it. So I finally got to see the movie and I really enjoy it. The only reason I don't own a copy is because it's out of print.

A video shop that specialized in horror movies. I bought a copy for around $15 a few years ago, then sold it to Half Price Books after watching it once, because--although it had some good elements--the movie just didn't work for me. However I am now kicking myself because this DVD goes for around $100 on eBay! Ah well, at least someone out there got to see it who might have enjoyed it more than me.

My friend and I went to an auction that sold a box of videos starting bid at 5 dollars. We knew some of the movies and wanted this specific box for teh movie 3 on a meat hook. We ended up winning the bid and Begotten was also in there. We watched, but didn't think of it.

I like to make experimental films myself. I came across a review of it while doing some research on the subject on the internet. It's quite an experience watching this movie. The whole thing is amazing.

I know the thread has been dead for four years now, but I actually find the question of how others got to "Begotten" interesting. Hopefully somebody else will also answer in the future.
I had just watched "Audition" and I wasn't sure if I had understood it, so I watched the second half again and came to the conclusion that from the point they make love in the hotel everything else happens only in the guys head, as a nightmare -there's a thread here on this same interpretation- and I found that really scary -specially because I like to analyze what's behind my own thoughts-. So I started to look for more information regarding "Audition" and that led me to Yahoo! Answers where a girl posted her thoughts about "Audition" and commented about another disturbing movie she had watched: "Begotten". I looked for it in YouTube and it was there so I started watching it but stopped afer a few minutes because I thought it was only torture trash, specially since many stupid kids had replied to this girl's comments in Yahoo! Answers. I went back to the girl's comment and she seemed a smart person to me so I read more about the film in Wikipedia and here and returned to YouTube to finish it.
And yes, I found it disturbing but also interesting and I can say I liked it and is one of my favorite films now. I like photography so that also helped.

I was about 12 and really into cult or obscure movies. Saw it on the shelf at a local video store. I was horrified, but loved it at the same time. I bought that same copy years later when they went out of business.
