When Belle showed the villagers the magic mirror with the Beast in it...

... why didn't any of those people question how she managed to come into a possession of such a magical item at the time and why didn't anyone react too surprised around it?

I mean, this was set at the time where there was no ipads or tablets or anything so it couldn't be possible that it was mistaken for some kind of computerized portable electrical appliance.

But seriously?

It's a plot hole. Now that I think about it, I'm amazed they didn't burn her at the stake before heading off to the castle. I guess they were too distracted by the confrontation with Gaston.

reply

They were probably more concerned about the beast shown in the mirror.

What about the plot hole about Beast’s actions in the mirror? He’s roaring showing his teeth and everything! Whereas back at the castle he’s reflecting in sadness, in love. Holding the glass with rose under it. He looks gentle. What was in the mirror was almost a vision of his former self before he fell in love with Belle. I guess be careful what wish for really means something in this movie, foreshadowing Aladdin.

You remember how he was howling and lamenting his grief from the balcony as Belle left? A lot of people could easily misinterpret that as a threatening form of growling, roaring, and showing his teeth, because they didn't know the whole story. In fact, as a kid, I myself thought he was roaring.

reply

Oh yeah forgot about that part. Thanks!

In a deleted scene, a tiny Apple logo can be seen on the back of the mirror. In small print it said iMiroir 2.

Disney sanitizes the tales a lot (sometimes to even flip the whole moral of the story like in Hunchback). You dont burn the witches in disneys world.

reply

Esmeralda would have something to say about that...

reply

Esmeralda survived, so I don't know what your point is...

I think he's pointing out Elsmerelda was taken by people and they tried to burn her at the stake. Except Quasimoto saved her from that fate. Also yeah. The people didn't think much of the magic mirror. Then again they were all loyal buffoons of Gaston who were too full of it to see he was a corrupt person.

reply

Maybe the villagers assumed her father invented the mirror? Bit of a stretch, but...
