If they DID manage to create it in the 1950s... who would you cast?

I heard this movie was in development during the 1950s but collapsed for some reason. But if they did successfully manage to make it during the era, which actors and actresses do you think could have done the voices?

My pick...

Belle: Maybe Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe or Vivien Leigh
The Beast: James Dean (though I'm not sure if he was a good singer or not)
Gaston: Elvis Presley or Marlon Brando
Cogsworth: Lawrence Oliver
Mrs. Potts: Betty White

Dunno about the others...

Some of those stars you mentioned were contracted to other movie studios (i.e. Taylor was signed with MGM, Marilyn Monroe with 20th Century Fox) so unless Walt Disney negotiated with the studio leaders to lend them to work on his films, he would not be able to get those stars. But we can dream...

Belle: Julie Andrews
The Beast: Yul Brynner (I may have to think more about that.)
Gaston: Howard Keel (His baritone singing voice sounds so much like Richard White's.)
Lumiere: Maurice Chevalier
Cogsworth: Terry-Thomas (or Luis Van Rooten using his Grand Duke voice from Cinderella)
Mrs. Potts: Verna Felton

To my knowledge Walt Disney tried twice in the 30s and 50s too make this movie, but could not make it to his liking. But during his time that Disney did animated movies he used professional voice actors rather then the big celebrities much how they do today. And I don't think that Colonel Tom Parker would not have accepted a role for Elvis Presley other then a role that a would get him top billing in the movie. The only time that Elvis Presley played in a movie that he didn't have top billing was his film debut Love Me Tender. In which he received 3rd billing for the movie, and then Colonel Tom Parker would nix movies for Elvis Presley by either demanding too much money, or even top billing that the crew weren't willing to give.

I can't really picture Elvis as Gaston or any villain. James Dean would've been great as Gaston.

Elvis (I'm a fan) might have had a deep, booming voice that could reach the back of an auditorium and could definitely project temper, but he's definitely good guy material in all of his roles and his natural personality lent itself towards that. He wasn't remotely arrogant. Quite the opposite. He was quite humble.

Elvis with his strong voice, but really a sensitive sweetheart is actually not a terrible choice for the Beast. And the singing certainly wouldn't be a problem. I can't imagine they'd only have him in one song, though he actually was happy when he got a movie where he wasn't bursting into increasingly dreadful songs every few minutes. Some of his Westerns and the last few, more mature films are lower on the song counts.

All wrong for Gaston, though. Just not even close.

It's fascinating casting, though, and I think he'd have been fine in VO work (excellent even, seeing as he was astonishingly charismatic through his voice, both spoken and singing). The biggest problem would have been Col. Tom Parker, no doubt (Elvis couldn't do world tours because Parker was an illegal Dutch immigrant), who prevented a great many things for Elvis' career and was stealing half of his earnings at one point. The other issue is you'd never pull the Memphis out of Elvis' accent, so the Southern drawl would be quite present.

I hated that Colonel Tom Parker had such an iron grip over Elvis' career and it is sad to think that if Disney made Beauty and the Beast in the 50's, Tom Parker would probably not let Elvis appear in it. As all Elvis fans know, Parker was a leech. Not a manager.

I think that if this came out in the 70's or the 80's, I could see David Bowie as the Beast. Better yet, if we got a live action version (done by Disney or not, it doesn't matter) in the 70's or 80's, once again there's a part of me who could see Bowie playing the part. I could've seen Bowie voicing the Beast even in the version we got in 1991. His role as the Goblin King in Labyrinth is partly why I could see him in Beauty and the Beast.

I wonder who Dennis Hopper could've played in a 1950's version of Disney's Beauty and the Beast since back in the 50's he acted alongside James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor a lot of times? Maybe he would have worked as Lumiere or Maurice?
