Elvis (I'm a fan) might have had a deep, booming voice that could reach the back of an auditorium and could definitely project temper, but he's definitely good guy material in all of his roles and his natural personality lent itself towards that. He wasn't remotely arrogant. Quite the opposite. He was quite humble.
Elvis with his strong voice, but really a sensitive sweetheart is actually not a terrible choice for the Beast. And the singing certainly wouldn't be a problem. I can't imagine they'd only have him in one song, though he actually was happy when he got a movie where he wasn't bursting into increasingly dreadful songs every few minutes. Some of his Westerns and the last few, more mature films are lower on the song counts.
All wrong for Gaston, though. Just not even close.
It's fascinating casting, though, and I think he'd have been fine in VO work (excellent even, seeing as he was astonishingly charismatic through his voice, both spoken and singing). The biggest problem would have been Col. Tom Parker, no doubt (Elvis couldn't do world tours because Parker was an illegal Dutch immigrant), who prevented a great many things for Elvis' career and was stealing half of his earnings at one point. The other issue is you'd never pull the Memphis out of Elvis' accent, so the Southern drawl would be quite present.

I hated that Colonel Tom Parker had such an iron grip over Elvis' career and it is sad to think that if Disney made Beauty and the Beast in the 50's, Tom Parker would probably not let Elvis appear in it. As all Elvis fans know, Parker was a leech. Not a manager.
