Were there really that many people inhabiting the castle?

Okay so pretty much every inanimate object in the castle is alive, down to the last drinking glass. So where all these things once humans who were transformed when the curse was placed? If so, then the Prince sure had a lot of servants. I always assumed that the spell didn't just turn the people into household items but also made everything else alive too, seeing as some of these things don't have eyes and mouths. But I could be wrong.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

I always interpreted it thus: all the objects that a) had faces b) could speak or c) do both were originally human. This would then consist of Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs Potts, Chip, Babette, Wardrobe, Stove and the tap with a female face that can be seen during Be Our Guest as soon as Mrs Potts starts singing her part. And of course the Footstool/dog.

Just to play devil's advocate, one issue that could be raised from my theory is this: how does it account for all the other teacups that are Chip's "brothers and sisters"? My interpretation of it is that these were the children of the other castle servants (as well as some that we possibly didn't see or get to meet) and that all children were turned into the same household object, namely a teacup.
