So is it closed then?

The rumours and report on bttf.com suggested it was closing October 1st...which has now come and gone. Is the ride still open?

It's still on the Universal website, but I've no idea how up to date they keep that anyway.

reply

It is still open! It is tentatively set to close on October 15th 2006.

reply

according to this page it may be replaced with a transformers ride -

It wasn't open for HHN, just during the day. Not enough staff, since everyone was expecting to be working somewhere else by Oct 1st. They all work at different rides. Yes, it DEFINITELY is closing.

reply

it is definately closed, i was there. they are replacing it with fast and the furious or simpsons, but there are current legal disputes to be settled first.

reply

It is not closed yet. It operates during the day. Part of the ride is closed (I think the 3rd floor for those of you who know what im talking about)...the rest is expected to close in early november. No official date has been given to anyone yet (including the employees). But for those near by or die hard fans...go now! time is running out. I was also told that if everything goes perfectly the new ride should be open by next summer (this makes sense if its the simpsons since there is a movie coming out next summer). :(

reply

I was there last week (October 26th). The ride is still up and running and as far at I know there is no sign that it is coming down. It might in the future (heh heh heh) but as of now it's still open and still going.

DON'T CLOSE THE RIDE!!

Does anyone at Universal Studios even know that this thread exists?

A Simpsons ride? PLEASE !! That show is so tired now they need to put that thing to sleep.

A Fast and Furious ride? Give me a break! 2 Crappy movies do not a good ride make. And besides, with all of the BS going on about how Video games leads to violence in kids, don't you think that some nutbar out there would have raised the point of how a FatF "Ride" may teach kids to speed when driving?

Anyway, anyway - Universal Studios: Read this. Closing BTTF:The Ride will be a BIG mistake. You invested $80 Million in this ride 15 some odd years ago and while I'm sure you've more than made a good ROI, there's still lots of life and FUN left in this baby. Don't close it!

Do this instead: CLose it for a month, then Paint it, fix the screen, remove the burned-in CRT's and replace them with some LCD screens. Then invite the cast and crew down for a grand re-opening. This should be especially fun now that Michael J Fox is back in the news.

If you have some extra money to spend, why not re-make the movie inside and make it a whole new BTTF Adventure? As much as I love the current one there's nothing wrong with re-making it!! You want new fans? A Younger audience? Remake the movie of the ride, and get exactly what you asked for, AND get all of the fans of the ride back to see the new chapter!

In my opion, this will cost you guys far less, and will get you another 15 years of HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY Time Travelling customers.

Besides : What would you do if one day, Bob Zemeckis and friends decide to make a BTTF Part 4?

LONG LIVE BTTF: THE RIDE!

So what about the Back to the Future ride in California?

Two summers ago I went to Orlando and the ride was in kinda bad condition, the projection screen was in surprisingly horrible condition and some of the stuff throughout the wait line didn't work.

I was hoping they'd do like George Lucas with Star Tours and commit to bring in HD projections and other renovations to make the ride better

I went 4 days ago and everything's still up and running.

The quality's even gotten better and I go to Universal all the time.

reply

I went on the 16th and it's still up and running, albeit at 50% capacity.

bad news it closed on March 30th 2007. i loved that ride. i went on it in july 1997 when i was 9 and then again in april 2006. it kicked ass its a shame. they are replacing it with another virtual reality ride. its not going to be the same though.

reply

Yep closing at the end of march. I was just down there for 2 weeks and was glad to ride it a FEW times before they take it out. Also while on the BTTF note, someone told me before i left that the ride was falling apart, half the cars didn't work, lights were burned out...etc. Well you are extremely wrong my friend, the ride is up and runnin fine as if it were new again. It will be a sad day when the ride closes, but for all of us we'll have the memories of a ride that should of lasted forever. Finally, i was curious to know if they would sell the car and train that is displayed outside the ride. Perhaps this can be bought, anyone wanna split on it? lol

I was planning on going there on my 21st birthday JUST to ride BTTF the ride. I've loved those movies forever and i'll never get to experience the ride. What sucks worse is that on the precise day that I was going to go was around the time that they were planning a 25 year cast reunion in the park. I just can't seem to quell my depression anymore.

"Well you are extremely wrong my friend, the ride is up and runnin fine as if it were new again. "

Universal spent the money they had to repair one side of the actually huge IMAX dome. The other side has been closed due to faulty cars, lights, etc forever. Also, the car vibrations of 17 years has been slowing destorying the building. My friend, who works there, says there are cracks all along the building caused by the years of abuse the ride has done to the building itself.

It is a shame it's leaving because it was a fantastic ride, but maybe it's for the best. The only originaly rides left at Universal will now be Jaws, ET and Earthquake. My bet is that Eartquake will be the next to go.

reply

Now I realize when i said up and running like new again people thought i meant the entire ride when really i was talking about the one car i happened to be in. I know i made it sound like the whole thing when it is only running at 50% until closing in a week. I thank justkikz34 for letting me know about the situation of the ride. Me and many others i'm sure were not aware of this so i thank you again. Now about the original rides left at Universal, Jaws, E.T and Earthquake. E.T is garbage now so get rid of that, Earthquake breaks down every other day or every couple days it seems which leaves just Jaws which is still a decent ride. So here are my thought of them to go in order.....E.T, Earthquake, Jaws.

Fear Leads 2 Anger...Anger Leads 2 Stress...Stress Leads 2 Doobies...And Doobies Lead 2 Twinkies

reply

Get rid of Earthquake....it's seen it's better days. The look and feel of that subway is still real, but dated. It needs to be replaced with something just as cool though, something that is real and not CGI.

Jaws is decent but 2 or 3 years from now, that ride will see it's demise. The only reason they still have the ride is because it would cost them a fortune to drain the ride and build an entire new ride (probably outside).

ET....hehe. I didn't go on ET when I was at Universal last week. I knew better.

I was totally PISSED when I walked by Back to the Future and it was closed. My friend literally yelled out loud, "ARE YOU FREAKEN NUTS!!!!". This was one of the park's most memoriable ride to date and having grown up in the 80's, 90's it's a shame to see it go. It seriously hurt to hear that the simpson's are gonna be replacing Back to the Future. I love the Simpson's....but man, they could've updated the ride or rebuilt certain sections, no close it. Back to the Future Parts 1 and 2 are seriously in my list of top 10 films of ALL TIME being made. Part 3 was good, but was the weaker of the 3 I thought.

Before this ride closed, it should've been Earthquake. I'm serious, get rid of that ride. I love it, but I can do without it.
