The Superior Telling

It's a pity this hasn't gotten a DVD release because it totally leaves Goodman's wretched piece of crap in the dust completely. Ruth's story is told with far greater accuracy and it also shows more complexity in his relationship with Miller Huggins (who is treated totally unfairly in the Goodman film) and also shows that his own flaws were what likely kept him from ever managing.

Overall, I think this along with "Eight Men Out", "61" and "The Bronx Is Burning" represent the best baseball history movies I've seen and the strange thing is how each of these films are connected to each other in different ways of casting and story!

1-John Anderson reprises his "Eight Men Out" role as Commissioner Landis in this film.

2-The character of Claire Ruth is features again in "61". In that film, Donald Moffat who played Jacob Ruppert in this one, is playing Commissioner Ford Frick trying to protect Ruth's reputation as the home run king.

3-"61" has Christoper McDonald and Joe Grifasi playing Yankee broadcasters Mel Allen and Phil Rizzuto. Both would then appear in "The Bronx Is Burning" as Joe DiMaggio and Yogi Berra!

4-And to take it full circle, Stephen Lang is also in "The Bronx Is Burning".
