Question from another Bates movie

I read that Kathy Bates did a hot tub scene in "About Schnidt." Nude!! In that thread it was mentioned that she also did a nude scene in "At Play in the Fields of the Lord." As I have not seen this movie, I was wondering if this was true?? Also did anyone see "About Schmidt", and that infamous nude scene ??

THIS IS NOT HERE

Yes she is nude in the movie. One of the best movies ever made. Wonder what is keeping it from being released on DVD?

Wonder what is keeping it from being released on DVD?

This is the question that brought me here. I noticed in all online databases that every "made for cable", lame movie that hannah or berrenger was ever in (and they did make some bad ones) are available on DVD but not "At play..." Makes me wonder if there is some sort of censorship going on by some religious people in power positions. This is NOT an antireligion movie, though. It IS one of the best movies ever made, it successfully compacts the results of clashing cultures into a very entertaining, well-acted, and finely-filmed two-hour epic. The cast is an odd mix that works suprisingly well and even though Im not a fan of Quinn or Berrenger they play their roles perfectly. I realize many might think this movie is an attack on missions, but one cannot neglect the historical results of such conquests, many that go back hundreds of years and were followed by conflict and cultural annihilation, movtivated by greed of more technology-advanced governments. As "The Mission" (DeNiro and Irons) is a more hollywood, overly dramatic (although a very good movie too) flick of a similar theme, "At Play..." seems to stay in the real world through most of the movie, only occassionally dropping its authenticity for a brief moment. If this movie ever becomes available DVD please by two copies and send one to me.

I have to think that censorship is indeed involved. Years ago, when it was released to video, I worked in a video store and took it home (like most films) and watched it. I was surprised at the child nudity (full frontal) and suspect that in today's more conservative political atmosphere the film is likely considered unacceptable (though Pretty Baby is still out there). Added to that, with the hard look at religious intolerance (profoundly scripted and performed) I would not be surprised that the hodlup is somewhat "political." But, this isn't the only film not to see its way to DVD - yet - and some of thsoe films are real sleepers (the fine Canadian film, Shadow Dancing) and some are very disturbing - Jeff Goldblum in Mr. Frost comes to mind.

Yeah, Kathy was "nude" sort of. It was like she was involved in mud wrestling... with herself. Not a pretty sight.

Mud wrestling, with herself? Uhh, could you explain a few things please?

"... I spit food into your pocket when you weren't looking."

She was "dressed" like some Indian shaman or something like that, nude, covered with mud and leaves, running around like crazy... it wasn't a big deal in my eyes, she was in pain after losing her son...

Ha that is funny and so true. She is a fantastic actor though.

Yes, she has a nude scene in "About Schmidt," showing that she is comfortable with herself, especially in that role, as she's a very liberal character, after Jack Nicholson's character.

For Adventure369 to "cringe," how rude you are!!! Many women resemble Kathy Bates, and are proud of it. This movie had nothing to do with sexualizing Ms. Bates. As her character, she was a rigid intollerant Christian Missionary, and she "cracked" at this point in the movie, to show she'd gone off the deep end with losing her child, and having issues about being hypocritical over "sharing the love of Christ," which I believe in, and being judgemental, which is not something that Christ taught.

For those who are intollerant of heavy women, you should be ashamed of your judgmental, deviant minds.
