What was so 'Heart of Darkness'-like about the making of this movie?

On Aidan Quinn's IMDB page, there is a quotation of him saying how difficult it was to make "At Play in the Fields of the Lord", not because of the jungle itself, but because of what was going on between the actors and on the set. Does anyone know what kind of stuff he was referring to?
