OMG, she represented the stereotypical Fundamentalist Christian Wife: fat, obnoxious, close-minded, judgmental, etc. I've known many like that, due to my Baptist upbringing!
Such a well-behaved boy in the movie and she slaps his hand for touching anything, berates her husband for telling stories to the kid outside anything not within her religion, and tells the kid he looks like a demon walking around nude with the native kids
And seeing her naked traumatized me for life!
I think this movie is brave for exposing what fundamentalist christian thinking does to people. She is a stereotype, but unfortunately, one I have seen in person. Any missions minded christian NEEDS to watch this movie! She illustrates what can happen when a person is overwhelmed with living in a dangerous remote location.
shareI haven't seen the film but would certainly like to, but is the Daryl Hannah character, also a Christian missionary I believe, any better than Kathy Bates' character simply because she's tall, blonde and slender?
