The use of 'unusual' nudity

Hello everyone

I am writing a piece on the use of nudity in cinema (as well as the wider entertainment industry as sex sells) and was hoping to include a section on shall we say 'unusual' nudity in movies (as in older or fairly unattractive/unfit people nude).

I was wondering if anyone could suggest other films that contain nudity that is not put in to titilate teens into seeing it/buying the DVD?

The only other films I can think of are About Schmidt (Bates again), Something's Gotta Give (Diane Keaton), Laurel Canyon (Frances McDormand) and Camilla (Jessica Tandy).

Thank you.

The first one that comes to mind is The Shining (1980) - the old woman in the bathtub.

Peter Skarsgaard in Kinsey (2004)

Various moments in Schindler's List (1993)

And I recall that in the original broadcasting of The Holocaust back in 1978 that when the people were taken into the "showers," broadcast TV (NBC, I think) actually showed backside nudity.

Tom Berenger was good in this movie, but the film itself was too long

Yes, he is totally nude in it, also full frontal. Isn't he in the US (or where are you from) version, then??! That would be strange, because the nudity IS absolutely normal and not ment to be arousing.

Hannah's character said "I could tell he wanted me".

You mean, he was... he had a ....

Unfortunately though there are lots of free thinking well balanced people in the US there are , alas, still too many puritans with sexual problems. However, don't be too smug fellow Europeans, we have our own share of puritanical nuts as well.

if hes naked in it then i gotta see it :P

Geoffrey Rush in Quills, that is very strong and impressive scene and Rush's nudity is necessary for the story. He is old and wrinkled and weird, and the scene sure is not arousing!

Also the nudity scenes in Schindler's List are not titillating, but horrifying.

I did notice that Tom was "waxed," which threw me for a minute; I kept squinting through the shadows, saying, "Wait...wait, is he completely naked? No...Yes, he is!!"

By "unusual nudity... (as in older or fairly unattractive/unfit people nude)" do you mean when they are still shown in a sexual context?

If not, then there are a wealth of films that aren't restricted in this manner, even Disney had Charles Smith nude in "Never Cry Wolf" (amazing film)... though I suspect this isn't the kind of thing you're looking for. That would be more 'natural' nudity (as in showing nudity as a naturally occurring thing) than unusual.

You also might want to check out "Code 46" and "Morvern Callar". Two interesting films with Samantha Morton (and the same Cinematographer), which has sexual nudity, but not designed to arouse, at least not in the standard Hollywood manner.

Rosie O'Donnell in "Exit to Eden"

...i saw it as a kid on late night cable and it's a scene that has scarred me for life.

reply

What?? Rosie was wearing leather. She wasn't naked.
