I'm all for technological advancement(well, ones that don't hurt us), but do any of you think that CGI cartoons almost look worse than the hand rendered stuff? And all of these modern CGI kids movies are all the same and don't have much depth to them. I miss the hand rendered animation, especially the style used in Don Bluths films.
-You've heard of the Golden Rule, havn't you? Whoever's got the gold makes the rules!
I Agree with all of you. All this CGI stuff is murdering the american animation business. well some are okay but all in all CGI animated films except the Pixar Films ain't worth anything. Let's hope The Princess And The Frog brings it back alive
The world has forgotten in the past decade that music and animation is art. They bastardize it left right and center now, which is why there's little left.
You see, the problem is. A lot of studios like Dreamworks and Fox want to copy Pixar's success. The problem is though, they think is why Pixar does so damn well. But that's not how they do well. They have great stories and a good cast to go with it. Dreamworks and Fox just get the wrong idea and thus, abandoning any sort of classic animation. Even Disney got the wrong idea.
"While guys hold on to their toys forever, girls soon throw out their playthings."
I wish they were still making movies like Fievel, the original Lion King, All Dogs Go To Heaven etc. I loved those as a kid. If they still made stuff that good I'd probably still be watching them. As of now I mostly only watch Pixar stuff when it comes to kids movies.
Wow, all of you.. you all don't seem to know ANYTHING about the art of Animation, do you? How exactly is CGI murdering the "American Animation Business"? You seem to think 3D movies animate themselves, by your comments. In Animation, the SAME RULES apply, from making a stupid little flip-book, to 2D, AND 3D Animation. Pixar (Which is Disney) does a great job! But so do others. It takes A LOT of skill, talent and patience to animate things... it shouldn't be about how things look, 2D.. 3D.. but about the performance! The acting, the life the animators put into their characters, whether it's 2D or 3D.
Now.. on the subject of what's killing the "American Animation Business"... that's movies like your beloved "Princess and the Frog", which you think it's made by Disney, but in reality the animation is divided to smaller, underpaid, animation companies.. scattered all over North America and countries like China and India. That's the sad truth.
Animators are Animators. They can do whatever they want. The people making the 3D stuff, are the same ones that used to make 2D animations. They still lose the same hours of sleep, trying to bring you great products and great films. You should be freaking grateful.
I think I'm the only one in this topic who disagree's.
While I am willing to admit that there have been a lot of bad CGI stuff out there and I do feel that some companies do decide to take that rout because it is probably easier than hand-drawn animation, there have been some really great stuff over the years. Not just Pixar, but a lot of other CGI films by other companies as well. When it comes to DreamWorks, they've made great films like Shrek, Over The Hedge, Kung Fu Panda, and some others, though they have made some bad ones too (Shark Tale, Bee Movie, etc). Ice Age is pretty good, and Sony Pictures Animation had made a couple good films (Surf's Up).
So yes, there are plenty of bad CGI films... but there are a lot of bad hand-drawn ones too. As much as I like the American Tail films, I've seen way better, and I've seen CGI films that would put it to shame. Lets not forget the sequels after this sequel, which weren't that good. I think people automatically jump to the conclusion that Hand Drawn is better than CGI because of Nostalgic reasons, and that CGI can be an art form just like Hand Drawn animation... except when companies are lazy with that animation (like Casper's Christmas that I saw the other day, which had incredibly shotty CGI and was just shameful). Plus, CGI does get used too much, so I don't doubt people get tired of it (some films become nothing but a CGI-fest... it does take some heart out of the film, unless it was done well).
But like everyone else, I really do wish that they would return to hand-drawn animation. The Princess and the Frog was a huge step in the right direction, and since that film has been greatly popular, I'm hoping that it'll pave the steps for more hand-drawn animation to come.
I missed seeing that in Theaters. I believe it was a hit, so perhaps that will convince other companies to bring back Traditional Animation (personally, I wish DreamWorks SKG would also go back to traditional animation too and make more films like "The Prince of Egypt" and "Spirit").
Personally, for 2D animation I prefer hand-drawn, or at least in the style of hand-drawn animation. As mentioned above, The Princess and the Frog had very good hand-drawn style animation, even though it was computer animated. Another well known example, The Simpsons, seems to have experienced a big change in animation style in the past 5 or 6 years. Compare episodes from Season 7 with episodes from season 21: the differences will be glaring, and personally I prefer the older style. The newer ones seem too clean, almost, which spoils the semi-realism that still existed when they weren't so computer reliant. However, the thing I hate most about current computer animation is those shows, like "Supa Strikas", that pretty much just use a flash animation. If a (relatively) high budget TV show looks the same as the cutscenes for Adventure Quest Worlds, something isn't right.
Googol! Googolplex! . . . I guess that's one way around the 100 Chars limit :-D
Hand-drawn animated films all the way as well. There's something about a traditionally animated film that is much more pleasing to the eye than all the CGI worlds (that are now sadly becoming the norm) combined.

I think there are actually plenty of people. Including me. It just looks way better, more beautiful and alive. CGI often looks like plastic toys or puppets.
