He was nothing short of a HUGE a**hole and mean spirited to everyone, mom included. So I always find myself wondering why the Mom was so partial to him, so sad when he left, and seemingly withdrawn into some sort of shell after he was gone?

Moters often love their most flawed children the most. The older brother was a deeply troubled young man, who was obviously headed for an unhappy fate. She loved him because he was her son. It's as simple as that..
