I'll answer my own question...lol...found it on the net, I just thought it couldn't have been fimed in actual Vietnam, my bad..lol..
Very few adaptations of novels to the screen have ever been rendered so faithfully. Annaud is known for the meticulousness with which he approaches the details of his films, including the historical ones, and The Lover is no exception. Annaud undertook to set the story in images, which he rendered as a Hollywood-style production using a rigorous academic aestheticism, with an absolute fidelity to the text. He felt he should spare no effort to reconstruct the 1930's environment, not only out of consideration for his viewers, but also out of respect for the Vietnamese people. The outdoors scenes were filmed at the historical sites, in Sa Dec, Vinh Long, and Saigon. All the costumes of the époque, traditional, of rich and poor Vietnamese, of military personnel, had to be made, employing some fifty people for more than a year. Another 800 people were needed to build the film's accessories, such as carriages, bicycles, rickshaws, and so on. The ferry on the Mekong River and the local bus were built based on original photos. The black Morris Leon-Bollet limousine, essential to the story, led to a six-month, worldwide search. A black 1929 limousine was finally located in Seattle. The steamship, which takes the girl and her family back to France, was found in Cyprus, where it was repaired at great expense, so it could sail to Saigon. All the indoor scenes were filmed outside Vietnam. The actual filming, started in January 1991, was completed in ninety-six days, and was finally on the screen in 1992.

I think it's awesome that this movie is situated in Sa Dec. This is my family's hometown and I really wonder if my grandparents have any recollection of Marguerite or the Chinaman. They've lived there all their life. But it's too weird of a question to ask...especially to old tradition folks. Too bad the filming of the movie started a year after my family left Vietnam.

I know a Vietnamese man who was there when this movie was filmed. He later returned there to visit family and took photographs of where this movie was shot, for example the school, etc. So wonderful!
