Was This A True Story?

I just saw this movie on Netflix and wasnt sure if this was a true story or not. I know it was narrated part way through but didnt know if this was something that really happened.

In a strange way, this movie reminded me of "An Education." The whole being with an older man, then drama, sort of reminded me of it.

The film is based on a semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Marguerite Duras. Marguerite did admit to having an affair with a wealthy Chinese man when she was 15 and he was in his late 20s.
