The family scandal

What happened to cause the white community to ostracize the mother? The sound track was not clear.

It was just that they were poor.

If they were Americans they'd be called 'white trash.'

Towards the end of the film, the girl takes her lover to where the family used to live. She explains that when her father died, her mother took their savings and invested it in neighboring farmland but the officials cheated them, keeping the money but listing themselves as owners of all but the original piece of property. When the mother found out and tried to protest, the officials told everyone she was crazy.
