Why did her older brother leave?

I wasn't in the room during the part when he was on the boat. So I never knew why he was leaving or where he went.

Umm No. The mother clearly states that the Chinaman was most generous is paying off the older brother's opium den debts as well as his passage to France. (1:31:13 on Netflix on Demand)

I don't know what was in the deleted message. But at the beginning of the film, after the first fight, the mother says that she has arranged for the older brother to be repatriated (IOW, sent back to France). It isn't explained why this takes so long, but perhaps they had to pay for his passage and could not get the money together until the Chinaman paid for it.

He was in legal trouble for stealing from the opium dens and his mother wanted to get him out of the country.
