Didn't he promise to meet after he was married?

She asks him to promise to meet for one last time after his wedding and before she sails for France. She showed up at the flat, watered the two trees, and waited for him. Do we know why he didn't show up? Perhaps this is explained in the book.
What a beautiful movie!

Probably because he was married, and because he didn't want to deal with the pain of being with her for one last time. I'm pretty sure his whole perception changed when he got married; his duty was to his family from that point on. It was the seal to their affair, the end of it. I wasn't surprised he didn't show up, his face said it all at the wedding ceremony.

What do you mean he didn't show up? She was watering those Bonsais while he was sleeping in the bed. That's all they showed of this encounter, I am pretty sure I saw him lying there sleeping right at the beginning of the scene very briefly. And I watched it today.

I do not know what film you wherr watching but in that scene where she returns to their bedroom, the room has been completely stripped of home furnishings, even the bed has had the linen taken off, so I dont know why or how you saw the chinaman sleeping there?

On not seeing the chinaman she goes to water the plants and is shown alone in that room sitting on a empty bed.

He did meet with her one last time. When she was on the ship, he was in the car. I'm sure she took it as if to meet up and get it on.

He said he could meet up after the marriage only by way of saying it was allowed and acceptable for men from his culture to have mistresses.
The only way he could try to bandage the pain he felt of truly loving her was by getting her to claim/admit that she had only been with him all along for the money at about 1:50.
