THE MYSTERY OF OLIVIA

Does anyone know what Olivia's purpose is in this household? She's not the maid, because the maid is in a uniform. She doesn't seem to be the children's nanny. From what I gather, she's just a mysteriously pregnant woman (WHERE IS THE BABY'S FATHER AND WHY DOES NO ONE CARE THAT SHE'S HAVING A BABY IN THE KITCHEN?) who wanders around and plays the piano. Is she a refugee? A spy? A foster pregnant woman that Lillian is putting up out of the goodness of her heart? Does anyone have access to the shooting script of this movie? I feel like there was a major plot element left on the cutting room floor. PLEASE HELP.

I just watched this movie on Netflix after having not seen it in years and I am as stumped as you as to what purpose her character served in the movie. I understand that the children and their mother and grandmother lived together, but who was Olivia and why was she there? And why was she pregnant? And who was the father? Too many questions and no real answers.

Lol yeah, was wondering this as well...
The best I can guess is that she's supposed to be a close friend of the family's?

I've never fooled anyone. I've let people fool themselves.

The only logical explanation that I can think of is that Olivia was part of a subplot that was dropped but for some reason they kept the character.

I don't know why but I always thought she was an aunt who just happened to live there. I assumed the mom and kids lived in the home with their grandma. As a kid I just guessed this was their aunt.

Was thinking, maybe Olivia is Lillian's assistant. I mean, she is a rich woman, and I get the feeling she used to be an actress of some kind, maybe Broadway. There's a scene when the paramedics come in to help with Olivia's baby delivery and they ask for Lillian Brooks and she replies, yes, I'm the Lillian Brooks...obviously she used to be a big deal person. Maybe she was still acting in some kind of show and that's why Olivia was assisting her.

But, darn it, the film is definitely benefitted by her presence!
