I recently viewed this film again on Netflix and am amazed at how well the Thing effect has held up. Anyone know how this was accomplished? This film came out too early for the CGI to be that good, but it seems the motions were too smooth to be mechanical?
shareI'm not really sure, but I'm guessing it was probably accomplished with a green screen/chroma key effect (eg: someone was wearing a green body suit with only his hand visible, and they just keyed out the green.)

I remember seeing I think on Disney Channel a short video on making the movie. Thing was played by a magician. I remember that part. It was a magician's hand. There was an interview with him too. As to how they did it I don't know. I remember that part. Sorry.
