Dumb ending

He just lets his brother win, Joe didn't earn the scholarship, although I will say this idea that whoever wins the county championship gets a scholarship to Stanford is absurd. Even if Joe placed 2nd if his time was good enough the fact that he placed 2nd would be irrelevant.
