Very odd scene

I am sure others have noticed this too but did it not seem really creepy when Ventura was in bed with Tommy telling him the story about two men who used to be partners? I've always found this scene to be a tad on the weird side, not really sure what the writer/director was going for here.

"Have you paid your dues Jack? Yes sir, the check is in the mail."

I thought he was going to say, "hey Tommy do you like gladiator movies?"

A tad on the weird side? I give you the 2012 award for understatement. At the end of the scene she said she needed a shower. I did too.

church-1: Really a cringe-worthy scene. I don't know where the "partners" story went because I shut it out!
