How did it end?

I remember watching some of Golden Years a long time ago. Actually all I remember is that it was a TV show by Stephen King, David Bowie's song was the theme song, and there was a character who was getting younger and younger.

I never knew what happened to it. I just kept wondering if the character who got younger would turn into a baby and then a fetus and then finally... er, die.

Was there never an ending for this? Did it get canceled before the story was completed?

Never had a real ending, at least not on TV. If you get the DVD, you can see what was pasted on, to end it. It was cancelled before it could be properly finished.

reply

Was the pasted-on ending any good? Is it worth getting the DVD? Even to rent?

reply

Oh, never mind. I read all the reviews and some of them had spoilers.

reply

So, what are you going to do?

reply

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the video ending (I believe I saw it on VHS) differ from the last aired episode? Like SERIOUSLY?

I seem to recall on TV his wife got shot. On video she didn't...and he just sort of disappeared.

I was really pissed that they never showed the last episode that I thought must have existed on my local TV station...I guess it's nice to know I wasn't alone.

reply

I do remember being quite dissappoinged with the end. I watched all the episodes and..

he just disspppears never getting to their destination

If I remember correctly, it wasn't canceled. It was promoted as a "limited series", which meant that there were so many episodes and that was all (like a miniseries, but stretched out longer). It was the same as with King's "Kingdom Hospital". A TV "series" with a defined beginning and end...not meant to continue.

Please do not attack me for my opinions...we're all entitled to them.

I have the last episode on tape from TV as I had to work while it was on, or at least had it once. And oddly enough it has the apparently secondary ending rather than the one from the original showing. Made more memorable to me at the time because my aunt loved the series and we were both surprised at the diffrent ending which she greatly enjoyed as it had a more defined closure to it and a less grim tone. Memorable because she passed away not long after...

************SPOILERS BELOW************

The original ending went thus. (Least the ending we got locally.)
The two renegade agent characters escape, while Harlan and his wife are apparently killed. Jude is shot I think but not killed (Not positive on this as its been meny a year.) Most of the rest of the cast is killed off as well I believe. The Shop gathers the bodies and at the very end Harlan's body is seen to be glowing under the body sheet.

The secondary ending plays out much the same untill the end. Where instead Jude chases Harlan and his wife to a field with the two agents close behind. Jude is shot and Harlan and his wife embrace and then vanish in the green glow.

reply

Yeah, King likes his green glows. He uses it in a lot of his books.

reply

Actually it played a bit different:

Jude leads an assault on the building that the group is hiding in, during which Gina (Harlan's wife) is killed. Harlan refuses to leave and Terry and Cruise escape. As Jude continues the assault, Harlan leaps out and nearly bites his ear off, but is overpowered. Cruise and Terry vow to rescue him. It ends with Harlan strapped to a gurney, glowing, and it is implied the Shop will continue its experiments.

In the 2 tape VHS video I just watched last night (what a waste of time)

Terry.Harlan and his wife escape through a tunnel in the basement of the hippie house; they exit the tunnel and Jude pursues them outside, Jude is about to kill Harlan and his wife when Terry shoots him-Harland and his wife get the green glow and disappear - Terry and Cruise flirt and that's THIS ending. Where Harlan and his wife go is not explained; no more info on the mad scientist.
Some of the worst acting I've seen. More like a cartoon than real.
