Rewatching this again I realised that Terry as played by Felicity Huffman is very similar to Scully from the X-Files, both in character and performance. The funny thing is that Golden Years was made two years before the X-Files started. Coincidence, or not? The truth is out there . . .

I'm watching it now on Netflix and she totally looks like Scully, from the hair to the tone of voice to the trenchcoat...except for the skirt, of course.

I personally think it was just coincidence. Maybe some research may prove differently. It could be that the character of Scully was inspired by Terry, whether consciously or not?

I also was convinced it was Gillian Anderson for a moment, even though I knew she wasn't in this. Strange.
shareIn the early scene where she's standing in the doorway to pick up Harlan's wife, she does look exactly like Gillian Anderson. But throughout the series (except when playing off Stephen Root, who can make anyone a better performer just by proximity), she is one of the worst actresses ever. Sorry, but almost no facial expressions and even less vocal expression = bad.
shareI would not say the characters have all that much relation. Scully is a scientist and skeptic, the (sometimes annoying but well meaning) foil to Mulder's believer. Terry is an ex-Shop agent, in all reality a murder (by her own admission pretty much), who did bad things during her time there as Andrews' partner. She is, I believe, doing what she does in this show to try and in some way make up for her past. I would also say she is far less rational than Scully, she has a bit more a "fiery" personality.
In general, Scully was a good person who got caught up in weird s***. Terry is a bad person who is trying to be a better person now, who was already involved in weird s*** for a long time (because of the Shop).
