Does anyone know why Jo Anderson left when they decided to have Charley become a regular character?

I don't know but never warmed to her replacement.

Actually, I liked the later Charley. I found the original actress who played her cold and wooden. The later actress was warm, quirky and fit in better with the other sisters.

All I remember is Charley was brought in because Frankie had left the series and they still wanted the four sister dynamic.

When there's no more room in Hollywood, remakes shall walk the Earth.

I soo hated that too!! It was like there weren't 'really' two different actresses!! kwim?!? LOVED THE REAL CHARLIE!!

The producers offered Jo Anderson a full-time role on the show but she was unavailable, thus necessitating a re-cast (Sheila Kelly).
