It was never mentioned on the show what ZZ stood for.

Any theories or was it just a joke to show how spacy/out there she was (which obviously flew over my then 10 year old head)

Yep, it sounds like a name her mother would give her. Flower child.

I always assumed her name was Zizi, which is in fact a girl's name of Hungarian origin, until I saw that it was spelled Z.Z. Who knows what it actually means. :)
