I know I'm not in the target market for this show, but I find it hillarious. I'm a 29 yr old mother of 3 very young children originally from Oklahoma. I only see it on PBS, but I am disappointed when they decide to run something else instead. It's probably my favorite show.
I don't know much about how Canadian and Americans are different, so it took me a few episodes to realize the show was set in Canada. With all the gadgets he does and the enormous cache of cars he seems to have, I thought he was supposed to be from the Southern United States, granted I wasn't paying much attention to his accent. I only figured it out because he said "clicks"(not sure on the spelling) instead of miles.
Coming from Oklahoma, I never saw anything as ellaborate as the innovations he makes, but I was familiar with jerryrigging and tinkering and deffinitely duct tape. I think that anyone from a rural area in America can probably identify with this show. People from more urban areas probably might not get it.

reply

i have been watching him in one way or another since he did his first show, smith and smith, but I didn't realise that's where he created the red green character....guess that I wasn't paying attention..

there are a few things from this missing, not sure what movie, but I have seen steve smith with a cameo on a few movies since red green has been cancelled...ok, he had one line..but..

um...they're all over rural Ontario....my brother in law's family even had cars galore out in the field....so.....lol....

I have lived off and on in Toronto all my life, and I totally get it....

so yes, if you like the show, doesn't matter where you're from...

I started to watch this show called hard roc med..and I'm happy that newphew Harold is in that series....he plays one of the docs trying to get new recruits...

it's sort of our version of northern exposure.......I think...

but yeah

right now I'm watching the red green, how to fix everything, didn't realise that it's a movie though....it's just him on a stage...so not too sure if I'd call that a movie, but I have been to the place where it was filmed he mentioned it......

I am from America and I love this show (Note--I live in NH about 4 hours from the Canadian border, so I am familiar with Canada). The most surprising thing about this show is that it stars mostly males and yet is very popular with women. It's great to sit down with my girlfriend and watch a show where the humor pokes fun at men but isn't mean or over the top in that direction. It's sad to see the show go but I suppose 15 years is an incredible run for any show about a lodge in Canada.

I'm from Canada and I can't stand it. I will say that it isn't quite as bad as Air Farce. If you like this crap check out History Bites. It features more then a few of the red greed idiots running around and is pretty painful to watch. It's a shame Patrick McKenna has to do *beep* like this to get paid. He's pretty good in any dramatic roles he has.

Not all Canadian Comedy is terrible. Kids in the Hall is awesome. Less than Kind is a pretty funny show too(though you might need to spend some time in Winnipeg to really appreciate the cold and boredom)

reply

i find it awesome... no idea until now it was even from the party to the north (not and insult really and yes i am in the states.... idaho to be exact)

its a stupid funny show... just shut your mind off and laugh because you can....

I loved history bites, and was sad that it was cancelled..i enjoyed watching air farce until one of the actors died, and they started to replace everyone....especially with one of the women.....when they shoved one of my faves to the side, luba goy....(loved her, and that's a pun on her name).....to the side, I stopped watching....but I enjoyed watching that show with my dad at the end of the week...until it got too sad, and he lost interest..he's no longer around...but we would watch red green together too....

loved some of the characters...

now there too where we differ, I couldnt' stand kids in the hall, and other stuff like it...I tried watching the new one sunnyside, I think that one of the kids created it, but I'm not sure...I totally didn't enjoy that at all...even though I know where it's shot, and kind of what it's supposed to be about...

but i'll watch *beep* creek instead....

mr d...was too in your face...I had met teachers like him...and I don't want to see them on my tv screen...so....

reply

I know there are people who dislike Red Green but being Canadian I can appreciate the Canadian aspect. It never took itself too seriously and the object was to poke fun at men's clubs. One could also watch it without crude humour and sexual innuendos as in Two and a Half Men. I would rather watch Steve Smith any day than Charlie Sheen.

You don't have to be from Canada. Red green is one of the funniest shows.

I enjoy the show and think that if you don't care for it that is fine.

[deleted]

That's nice. Really. We care.

It's great! It's better than Home Improvement, and you don't really have to be Canadian to like it, but if you aren't, you probably just laugh because of our funny accents...So says my mom. lol

Steve Smith once came to Borders book store in Rochester NY to sign "Red Green Talks Cars A love story" He acknowledged that not everyone likes his show, but he said, "Red Green is like the Flu. Some people get it, some don't."

As an American, I can honestly say, Red Green is one of my favorite TV shows. Only problem is being in an area where you can't get the show.

I'm nowhere near Canada and I loved this show! It was freaking hilarious! I found the 'Stuffed and Mounted' DVDs parts 1 and two at the library. It was so good to see that show again!

reply

I'm Canadian and I don't like it very much (it's still better than "Air Farce", though).

I'm from Chicago and I love this show man, I watch it every saturday and sunday night just to see what trouble Red and Harold gets into. I hate the show ended, I'm getting into the reruns and all of the old shows and this show is great, great, great, great, great!

So this "Damn American" loves this Canadian comedy more than SCTV.

Hmm, I don't think I've ever seen one of these "Canadain" comedies of which you speak. Are they good?

As a damn American, though, I do like quite a few CANADIAN comedies. I just discovered "The Red Green Show" and think it's hilarious.

Who says the OP was an American? I know of LOTS of Americans who like the show and I am sure there are Canadians who hate it.

And to OP- why did you feel it necessary to come on this message board just to say you hated the show.

Guess what-not all shows will appeal to all people- otherwise all shows would be the same. The fact is we all have different tastes and all like different shows. It's called diversity.

I just do not understand why when someone dislikes a show they feel inclined to go to a message board for that show and say "I hate this". We don't care whether you like it or not.
We probably wouldn't like the crap YOU watch.

well put...

I keep on saying there are so many shows that I do not like...but I would never go on their message board and go ewwwwww I hate this show, it's the worse that's ever been made..and so and so is the worse actor ever....

um....like I said, how do you know..have you ever seen every show, every actor, in every country in the past 100 or so years...in order to say that....

if you want to say a line, then say he's the worse that I've seen.....or she, for that matter...but don't go and say it's the worse ever, or he'/she is the worse ever....because you haven't seen all that there is out there, and never will...

I agree, I love it. My whole family loves it. And my whole family consists of Mom, Dad, myself (a girl, if you can't tell by my SN), and my sister. We watch it whenever we can.

I just wish I could afford enough tapes to tape it whenever the mood strikes me so I can show my finace when he comes to WI.

I'm an American(I sorry our president is an idiot, I did not vote for him(well, technically, I'm too young to vote, but I woudn't have voted for him) and I love this show(not because of the accents, I really can't tell the difference). It's one of the few things my dad and I agree on.

My question to the people on this board who don't like it: Why are you here. Go find board for a show you like, and leave this one to the fans.

I believe that this is one of the best familiy-friendly shows out there that is still realitively funny. They don't cuss, get violent or all that other stuff that seems to be on all of the comedies or sitcoms anymore. I grew up on Simpsons, South Park and other extreme shows but this one is my favorite.

Thats not the reason I watch it though, I'm American and think its great because of all the building and creativity that the show has (sure its outlandish) but it kind of brings out an inventive side in all of us. So I'd say the creative, but funny handyman's corner and the quite funny adventures with bill segments are great.

Its just a nice show to watch and laugh at, something that PBS often lacks. So if you don't want to watch it, and can't find the strength to move the finger on the remote, I guess just watch and quit complaining. I myself get annoyed when Nebraska football overruns its time and over Red Green.

I love this show. I just wish I knew about it sooner. A friend introduced me to the show just earlier this year and I'm glad she did. The show is awesome and I plan to buy dvds of it as soon as I can.

reply

I LOVE Red Green! You can tell a few of them have accents, it's not blatant, but if you listen closely, you can hear it. I love the 'invention' section and the segment where he talks about the pros and cons of getting older. I love the cast and was surprised to see 'Who's Line's, Colin Mocherie as a guest. Red's outrageous one-liners and Harold's priceless facial expressions are hilarious. Humor like this is understood by few and I am proud to be part of that few. The rest who don't get it just don't understand this type of humor. For some reason (and if I offend anyone I apologize since that was not my intention, just an observation)this show screams 'redneck Canadian' although I don't know why. Like I said before, if I offended anyone, I apologize.

I loved graham green as Montrose...and some of the other characters, along the years....I didn't tape them, and even if I did, I don't have a vcr anymore.....so...

I wish that some of our stations here would replay the eppies..I'd love to see them again....like the ranger guy, and the septic system guy...and quite a few others.......

it is red neck Canadian.....through and through.....

you didn't offend me....

but what I want to know is like I said before, why do we still get the American comedies in droves, like fraser, and whatever....and not this show.....where is their Canadian pride...

The Home Network is CBC. They (used to) tape it in the CBC Brodcasting Centre.
PBS just likes to buy episodes off CBC.

RE: canned laughter
The show is filmed in front of a live audience, so the laughter is real. The outdoor segments are shown to the audience and their reaction is recorded. It is kind of cheesy, but it's better than the canned stuff.

In general comment, I think this show is great and have been enjoying it for many years now. I'm an American, but can understand why most Americans don't like it. The majority of this country can't enjoy a show if it doesn't involve people getting shot, women taking their clothes off, or over-the-top offensive language. Now, there's nothing wrong with that stuff sometimes, but I love a good show that's just funny without all that. For me, this show is about people who you can relate to. I know lots of people just like Red Green, and other characters on the show, and the antics they get in to are just hilarious. If you don't get it, and can't relate to it, fine, don't watch it, and don't come to the message boards complaining about it.

reply

I just saw this show for the first time tonight, and I can honestly say that this is as funny as all get-out. The whole thing is totally funny, from Red's jokes to the little story-lines to the shorts. But hey, I come from Michigan, so I guess it's not unusual. (Just FYI, it was the BBQ sauce/Fuel additive episode)

reply

I love this show also, while I have not watched it as much as soom of you, I try to watch it if I have a free Saterday night. I can understand a lot of teenagers my age(I am 15) thinking that this show is very dumb and stupid, because it does not have any half naked "Chicks" or fast cars, or hip-hop artists. I enjoy this show very much and am very glad to see something from our friends from the North(I am from America, thou Canada is only like an hour drive from where I live in Montana) can give us something that is original and very comical. I always enjoy this show and so does much of my family. I once showed a friend this, and like the author of this topic he said he hated it because it had no "rap, boobs, or fast cars". Anyways you got another American who is a great fan of this show, also sorry about ranting on.

reply

I wrote for five seasons of Red Green. Even through all that, I almost never watched the show. I had certainly never seen it before I wrote for it. Some of the humour I find clever. I don't appreciate the constant sexism, though.

I attended the final taping tonight. There seemed to be mixed feelings among the cast and crew etc about the end of the 15 year run. I guess I'm feeling mixed about it, too.
