PoD made into a liveaction movie/tv-series

Now that would be fabulous :) What do you think about that? And who would you cast?

reply

Yes, it could be really cool. Not sure whom I would use for the characters though...

"If they do make a "Pirates of Dark Water" movie, I hope they make only one and resolve the destruction of the Dark Water in the first and only movie. Not interested in sequels or trilogies. We've had enough of those and we all know it wasn't necessary to make Matrix into a trilogy. They could've compressed all of them into one movie instead of stetching the material so thin."

I disagree. They cannot possibly compress all of that into one film. Most films today are 1-1/2 hours anyways. Too little time. They should do a trilogy, in my opinion. There is plenty to work with from the series to keep the films interesting and entertaining. The first film could detail how Primus initially sets out to get the treasures himself, but is betrayed. The second film could begin where the series began, when old Primus bequeths the task to an adult Ren, and he finds seven treasures with the aid of Tula and Ioz. The third film could end with all the treaures found, Octopon restored, Bloth killed by Ren, and Mer saved from Dark Water.

come get some, you walking piles of puss...

"Ren don't go there, essay" :)

If he weren't almost too old for it now, I would love to see Heath Leger as Ren, even though he'd have to roast himself to get that tan going.

For Ioz... Yeah I could see the guy who played Shang Tsung as him. Or maybe the guy who played Broken Sword in "Hero".

For Tula... hmm... the girl from Nash Bridges could do it, but I'm thinking... how about Amanda Beel, who we know can be badass from Blade Trinity, and who could probably pull of sultry with a little effort.

For Nibbler... definitely CGI. Get the guys who did the CGI on the new "Battlestar Galactica" series. For his voice, either get the original voice actor back, or, barring that, get Brent Spiner. He has that perfect you-can't-really-trust-me voice (just listen to him as Lore on ST: TNG, or Puck on Gargoyles).

For the Pirate Lord Bloth... hmm... You'd have to get somebody who could pull off the "big n mean" thing. I would say John Rhys-Davies, but that there's no way in hell he could pull off evil.

And I definitely think it ought to be a trilogy. Six treasures in each of the first two movies, one in the last, and the destruction of the Dark Water. I would even go so far as to kill of Bloth in the second movie and let the third /just/ be about the end of the adventure.

Man, I love this show! I was extremely ticked when I came to the realization that the show would remain unresolved! Anyways, I think a live action movie would be pretty awesome!

Who would I cast?

Ren - I think Orlando Bloom would be a decent choice for that part.

Tula - Lexa Doig from "Andromeda" and "Jason X", seriously hot actress! Kelly Hu would be my second choice.

Ioz - Either Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa (as mentioned previously) OR Dave Bautista (AKA "Batista" of WWE fame).

Niddler - CG, voiced by Adam Sandler!!!

Bloth - Michael Clark Duncan...big guy, can actually act, can play one mean sum'b*tch! 'nuff said.

Bloth's crew - Extras from "LOTR: ROTK" who played the corsairs of Umbar.

as for Nibbler... if we're going with CGI why not see if the original VA can still sound like him?

reply

Not to busts anyone's bubble or dredge up the dreaded race card here...
But none of the main cast from PoDW look white. At least not to me.
Ren looks like some strange mix of Asian+Indian and Caucasian.
Tula looks almost strictly Middle Eastern and/or Indian.
And Ioz looks Hispanic or Hispanic + Asian.

Even if a caucasian actor could tan himself to death, he'd never be able to bring himself near to the complexion that Ren has which is not a tan but his actual skin color as was shown in GameKeepers of Undaar when his shirt flapped open for a bit... Unless of course Ren has been sunbathing while no one was looking in the hot Mer sun or going to tanning salons in every port.

The closest physical matches I can think of for Ren off the top of my head in descending likeness are:
Takeshi Kaneshiro- dye his hair, slap on some contacts you're good to go. And he's a legitimate actor.

Nicholas Tse- He already dyes his hair five million colors. He's got the boyish looks for the role and is probably closer in age to Ren than Kaneshiro is as well as height and body structure.

Kamui Gackt- I dunno I think he could pull it off perhaps.

Rick Yune- not the best choice at all IMO, but the last resort.
and... Maybe... JUST maybe... Keanu Reeves... *shudder* No never mind, he can't act in my opinion, or I just don't like his performances..

For Tula:
Aishwarya Rai: no doubt she looks almost exactly like an older Tula, especially with her ever changing eye colors and what not.
She is the best match in my opinion hands down, no question.

Rani Muhkerjee: Looks nothing like Tula really, but has mad acting chops.

Parminder Nagra: she's pretty good as an actress. Just needs to evolve out of the tomboy/geek role she's being pigeonholed into.=p

And that's about it.=p

Ioz: *wheels in head spin*... I can't think of anyone off the top of my head whatsoever whose a physical match as well as an actor... =p Unless someone here is familiar with Spanish actors outside of the state. Maybe, Mark Dascosas aw hell I dunno.=p

I reckon Benecio Del Toro could do Ioz, but he'd need false eyebrows/ears etc.

reply

I agree that Orlando Bloom could play Ren, but I think the script would have to be AMAZING (PRETTY MUCH FLAWLESS) for him to accept the role. I would imagine that he would be afraid of being typecast into pirate films from then on... and just look at how few pirate films there are. He is already in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, and there's talk of more coming.

Another reason I don't think he'd end up playing Ren is because of the fact that even if he weren't in it people would say that it is a rip-off of POTC. If he were in it I think that no one other than big PODW would go see it because of that. I know that PODW was around before POTC was even written, but most people wouldn't remember that.

reply

When you say get the orginal actor back for the voice of Niddler do you mean original as in The five part mini series or as in the following two series which made up the bulk of the show?

In ferro veritas

reply

The rest seem fine.. but I don't think your selection would be accurate for Ioz. They don't have an asian look, they have more of Caribbean look to them (understandable as, throughout history, more notorious pirates came from the Caribbean)

Who would be the voice of Niddler? Maybe the should get the guy who did the voice in the series.

reply

I have been waiting for this to be made into a movie for a long time. Who knows if it will ever be made. However, instead of live action, maybe the whole thing should be cg. Tastefully done of couse like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. Not to mention CG has progressed quite a bit since that was made. Heck, if that where the case, get the same people to do the voices too!! That would rock!

reply

A CGI Niddler would suck, just like Jar Jar Binks sucked, he'd be equally annoying too. unless it was combination CGI like Gollum with a real actor and stuff...

For Tula I'd have Navi Rawat from Feast.
I agree with Benicio del Toro as Ioz, false eyebrows and all.
Orlando Bloom is a good hero and could pull off Ren without even breaking a sweat but for someone more eastern looking I'd go with Jet Li, as he does a lot of jumping around and kicking...

For Bloth I'd stick with Brock Peters, the original voice actor (Admiral Cartwright from Star Trek) but beef him up and change his face Sin City style.

Danny DeVito as Conk XDD, and Mark Hamill as Mantus.

I would also include a scene with Paris Hilton being torn apart and devoured by the Constrictus.

For Ioz I think Danny Trejo from "Desperado" & "From Dusk till Dawn." For Tula I like the idea of Kelly Hu or perhaps Michelle Rodriguez.

reply

This would make a great movie trilogy. I loved this show as a kid, does anyone know if it still comes on? I miss it so much!!!

Why is the rum always gone?

reply

I think this might actually be possible, now that PotC has been so successful. They might do it just because PoDW came first, and so they can cash in on the craze without being accused of ripping of PotC.

As for cast, I could definately see James McAvoy as Ren, but for the most part I'd want a relatively unknown cast. We don't need any superstars hogging the spotlight. This shouldn't be a movie about Tom Cruise, or Brad Pitt, or Antonio Banderas, Benecio Del Toro, Wesley Snipes, Angelina Jolie, Julia Roberts, or any other A-list actor. It should be a movie about THE PIRATES OF DARK WATER, and the actors should just focus on embodying that.

I would like to see the original cast back for a PoDW movie. Sadly, the original voices for Bloth (Brock Peters) and Niddler (Roddy McDowall, mini-series only) are both dead. Frank Welker (Niddler, full series and redone first 5 episodes) is still very much active, and Peter Cullen (Mantis) is still voice-acting.

reply

Oh this would make a wonderful movie. I too would ONLY make one, perhaps even if it was 3 hours. Better then 3 movies. I would love it if they resolved the series, defeating Bloth and finding all of the treasures perhaps. It would be a lot to cram into 3 hours, they'd probably have to change the series dramatically. It would be worth it.

Ren-Zac Effron
Tula-Megan Fox, although she does not look exactly like Tula I think she'd be very good at imulating and bringing the character to life.
Ioz-Christian Bale
Bloth-Michael Clark Duncan would also be a good choice.

reply

Ren - Mike Vogel (don't ask..he just poped in my head..so I'm not for sure about him..yet so it's on my so so list)

Tula - Amerie (Yes..the singer, I think she could pull it off and she kinda looks like Tula.

Ioz - Danny Trejo (Someone said his name in another post and I thought that was a great idea..but..he's kinda old for the part..so he's on my so so list right now)

That's all I can think of right now..but I'll be thinking about the cast.

reply

I stumbled across the intro on youtube, then thought it would be cool if it was a film.
Then I saw the bulletin on here lol.

reply

I'd like to see a Pirates of Dark Water cgi television program created in the same manner as the upcoming Star Wars The Clone Wars tv series.

reply

I would absolutely LOVE to see either a CG movie.. or a live action film...
although i have a feeling it would end up going the way of Hitman/Dead or Alive live action, than Pirates of the Caribbean...

so i think Final Fantasy: Spirits Within CG would be good...

but to keep with the ongoing topic.. if it WERE a live action.. i would chose:

Ren- Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Sunshine).. with a hair dye, i think he has the acting skills...

Tula- Fann Wong(Shanghai Knights) or Kelly Hu

Niddler (CG ala Gollum of course)

Ioz-I kinda like the Benicio Del Toro idea.. he just needs some hardcore eyebrows!

The rest.. i'm stuck.. but i'll leave that to the casting directors. *hinthint* hehe

reply

Danny Trejo would be a good choice for Ioz, but I'd rather have Hector Elizondo back. Chen Chang would also be a nice pick. Summer Glau or Ziyi Zhang would probably make for a good Tula. I agree that Frank Welker should reprise Niddler, like Dee Bradley Baker did for Momo and Appa in "The Last Airbender." Also keeping in the TLA vein, I would make Niddler a combination of CGI and animatronics/puppetry.

I noticed Jason Momoa in his role as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones role and immediately thought he looked like Ioz, so in my opinion he could be a good choice if it ever happened.

However, I'm not sure if it's really a good idea. This show isn't that good to begin with, though it has some cool elements. I know most people have rated it 10, but that's based on how much they remember loving it as a kid (unfortunately people do that). I have watched all episodes again as an adult, and it's really just an ok series. Of course it could work if someone reworked the entire story, but the rights would probably never be sold to any high end production company, so it would probably at best end up something like the TV series The Adventures of Sinbad, Hercules or Xena.

reply

Kredom I believe you mean Jason Momoa as Kahl Drogo, BUT YES, I agree completely. He would make a great Ioz as far as looking the part.

"The world is a fine place and worth fighting for." I agree with the second part.

reply

That would be fabulous, I loved that cartoon as a kid, use to pretend I was Tula lol. I would be happy as long as Hollywood wouldn't crap on the storyline. I can see it as a live action film, we are in the year of remakes anyway. And I think it would deserve to be told in 2 or 3 installments. My cast would be:

Ren - Alex Pettyfer or an unknown actor

Tula - Sheetal Sheth / Jessica Szohr or unknown actress ( I would say Zoe Saldana but she's in everything now )

Ioz - Gerard Butler / Jeffrey Dean Morgan / Clive Owen

Niddler - Puppeteer like old school Jim Henson mixed with slight cgi (lord of the rings / Avatar)

Bloth - John Rhys-Davies / Michael Clark Duncun

Konk - Danny Devito

Director - Peter Jackson / Guillermo del Toro / Tarsem Singh / Ridley Scott
