What has it taught you

I was 11 when this show started to air. I learned the brutal truth about racism especially in the segregated south. I'm really glad I was able to see it so young. WHY WAS THIS SHOW CANCELLED!?!?!

reply

I learned the same thing. I also learned that the majority of people are too stupid to watch TV. It is their stupidity that got this fine show cancelled. There is something terribly wrong when shows like "Desparate Housewives" is being viewed more than "I'll Fly Away".

reply

Is I'll Fly Away being shown in syndication somewhere? It was my favorite drama back then. I was remembering IFA after reading today that American Dreams (my favorite recent drama) has been cancelled despite the fans sending e-mails and postcards to have it saved.

reply

I'm so happy to not only see someone else disappointed by the cancellation of American Dreams, but others who love I'll Fly Away. I was a young teen when this show first aired and have been able to re-enjoy watching this and China Beach on the American Life channel. I've also been able to have new perspectives on the shows as an adult watching them as well.

A couple of recently discovered things regarding I'll Fly Away. I just discovered an episode guide at http://www.tv.com/ill-fly-away/show/2677/episode_guide.html.
I have a printed copy of the episode guide somewhere that eludes me at the moment.
Also I am hoping to establish email contact with someone who says they have all the episodes available. I'll provide any details I learn. I have all but four or five episodes on tape and would like to round out my collection.

Meadeskelton,
I agree with you. The only difference with racism in the south and in the north is that racism in the south is more overt and blatant and racism in the north is more covert and subtle.

I don't why you'd think I'd make my generalizations based on the media. I'm HIGHLY critical of the media which for some reason, people think is liberal, but it's not. My people are from the south. I'm from the north. I've lived and spent considerable amounts of time both places.

"The South was the scapegoat for America's race relations problem. In fact white and blacks in the South were more itegrated than in the north. I have several northern friends some of who have never even seen a black person, much less know any."

This statement seems to contradict your first sentence where you imply that the North is more racist than the south.

brightwing2, I have good news for you. No, I didn't save money on car insurance, but I'll Fly Away episodes are shown on TVOne (2pm - 3pm EST). I am watching it now, and it's a good show.

I'm a fan of the show. It's a real shame that they cancelled it. It's one of the few T.V. shows that NEEDS to be shown. I had a couple questions though. What happend to the Bedford's mother? What happend to Lilly's husband?

reply

From what I can recall (and it's been many years since I've seen this show), Mrs. Bedford was walking away from the mental facility where she was staying, and was hit by a car and died. Lilly's husband just walked out on her and Adelane. She tracked him down eventually, and asked for a divorce, much to the dismay of her father.

reply

Thanks

reply

Actually Mrs. Bedford had been released from the facility and was at home. She appeared to deliberately walk in front of a car and was killed.

Not enough people we're willing to watch something that challenged their particular world-views. That's my answer. I loved the show. Still can't believe something that good could be cancelled. I know why it was cancelled but it's difficult to incorporate reality with truth sometimes. Very difficult for me.
