Any updates re: when/where I'll Fly Away is or will be available on DVD?

This t.v. series still stands out in my mind as what t.v. can be, at its best. I would love to add the series to my collection; I'm not at all what you'd call a media buff, and the total number of VHS and DVDs I own is probably well below average. However, this is a series that I consider priceless and would feel grateful to own.

There are DVD copies available on the Internet if you search hard enough, but many are transcriptions from tape with only VHS resolution. The two-hour concluding movie was created by PBS after NBC canceled the series and PBS bought the rights and rebroadcast all the original episodes plus the movie I'll Fly Away: Then and Now. (Jason London replaced his twin Jeremy in the Then and Now movie because of a scheduling conflict.) Therefore creating a complete box set would require clearances from several parties.

A person posting here (living in Poland) claims to have copies of the series for sale but I and another person never received the DVDs after payment. Proceed with caution.

PBS has no rights to the series. They had the rights to rebroadcasts for a period of time, plus the wrap-up movie. But those rights have long since expired. Warner Bros. owns the rights to the entire series, including the movie.

Your comparison is like saying TV Land has the rights to do a DVD release of All in the Family because they once showed it. When, in reality, the production company (Sony) owns the rights to the show.

You might want to try going onto iOffer.com, that's where I was able to get the complete series. The quality isn't all that great (the episodes were recorded on VHS, then coverted to DVD-R) but it's nice to have the series nonetheless.

Thanks a lot (in a sarcastic tone). I went there and entered "I'll Fly Away" which it showed as TV Series, and what popped up was anything but family friendly!

I don't control the content of iOffer. Excuse me for offering help to someone interested in the series.

If you type in "Dallas" you'll get results of the famous 70s porno "Debbie Does Dallas." If you don't see the legit "I'll Fly Away" keep scrolling and you'll eventually find it (if the seller is still offering it).

I wonder if youtube has it. I was happy to find Nothing Sacred recently on youtube.
