What town and State was it set in?

I taped the last 3 episodes plus the final movie "I'll Fly Away: Then and Now", set 30 year later, when Norwegian TV was re-running it. I've just been watching those last 3 episodes, which are brilliant - the entire series is. But it says nothing about what town and State the series is set in. Although Nathan and his dad did go for an inteview for the University of Virginia, I believe. And Nathan refered to this as being upstate, but I never pictured the series as Southern Virginia. Anyone remember where it was set?

It was a fictional setting... South, small town named Bryland, late 1950s.
Your memory regarding the college interview and upstate is interesting.

I know Lilly later moves to Atlanta as set forth in "Then and Now" Don't know if that was out-of-state for her. A review of all episodes might reveal something. My memory isn't up to the task.

I'm excited because in the next two or three months the only two episodes I do not have recorded should be televised. My wife pf eight years has heard a great deal regarding I'll Fly Away from me... but I have refused to show her any of my tapes until I have the entire collection in hand.

I got the impression when watching this show back in its original run that it was set in Georgia.

reply

You are correct. it was filmed in the town I live in: Newnan, Georgia.

reply

Some of it was also filmed in Madison, Georgia.
Kandiceplain we seem to be sister towns as several movies were filmed in both our times.

reply

Rebel, what other movies were set in those towns?

reply

In various episodes, the town of Bryland is mentioned as being in the "Fifth District" (The Fifth Judicial Circuit of the U.S.). During the time of the show's setting, the Fifth District consisted of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisania, Missippi, and Texas.

Alabama, Florida, Missippi, and Texas can be eliminated since dialogue throughout the series has indicated Bryland isn't in any of those states. Also, references to "counties" within the state eliminated Louisiana, where "parishes" are what they are called. Thus, Georgia is the only possible location.

Although it wasn't filmed in North Carolina, I'm pretty certain that NC was the setting and Bryland was a fictional name for the town. I live in Raleigh, the capital of NC, and recall NC being mentioned several times. Seems that in the episode you mention about Nathan going to interview at UVa, something was said about him (or the dad) favoring that over Univ. of NC in Chapel Hill.
