Evie and Lord Montford

I'm nearly done with S2 in my re-watch of the series, and I wonder if anyone else believes Evie and Alexander would have lasted had Elizabeth consented to a divorce?

I have serious doubts that after the initial passion had worn off, they would have been deeply in love. For one thing, Evie was still only in her early twenties and her entire experience with men has been one reckless choice after another (Sebastian the deceitful aviator, Hugo the self-centered interior designer who wanted to mold Evie into the woman he thought she should be, Gilles the married and manipulative French couturier, and then Alexander, a powerful and much older married politician). Also, politics were obviously very important to Alexander, and once Evie plunged into her life with the House of Eliott, her political awakening initiated by Penelope was thrown the wayside. Evie was still very impulsive, sheltered, spoiled, and narrow-minded when it came to topics outside of her wants and desires and knowledge, so I find it difficult to believe that she'd stimulate the mind of a 40-something man with education, experience, and power.

Plus, I find it suspicious that Alexander wanted to marry Elizabeth after seeing a photograph of her in the Tatler, and then fell immediately into (allegedly) love the moment he met Evie. To me it seems he falls in love with ideals rather than pursuing a woman for who she is (hence his easy ability to discard Elizabeth once he has Evie, with whom much of their time is spent indulging in their passion rather than the normal aspects of a normal relationship), and once he and Evie were out in the open, would he have found a mundane everyday life with her appealing? I just can't help but feel their relationship was built on extreme mutual attraction and passion, as well as the spice of secrecy and romanticism ("we're soul mates unable to be together!"). If they'd met on honest terms, Evie probably would have grown bored with him after they'd burnt their passion away.

Yeah, you are probably right.

There was a bit when Evie and Alexander were arguing about whether the workers' strike was "right" or not. I felt that it was an important difference/distinction between them but the series never really fleshed it out.

Alexander looks like Kevin Kline!
