The Dutchess of Duke Street (a period BBC drama in which a woman rises from skivvy, to famous cook to to cook of the King of England to owner of a fashionable hotel)it's on VHS and DVD.

A Woman of Substance: an miniseries of a young English maid who rises to run a textile empire. This is available of DVD and VHS. Based on the novel by Barbara Taylor Bradford

Sins (not a strong as the other two, but still fun and another novel adaptation). A young woman goes from maid of a Count to model to head of a magazine empire. In the process she exacts revenge on the Nazi who assaulted her, killed her mother and sent her brother to the camps during the French Occupation.

Hi

If you like the House of Eliott, I agree you'll also really enjoy "Duchess of Duke Street".

Also, you'll probably like "Upstairs Downstairs" if you haven't already seen it. It's not a rag to riches story but 5 really interesting series about a well-to-do British household from about 1905-1930. It was devised by Jean Marsh and Eileen Atkins like HoE.

You may like "the Forsyte Saga" [granada version and bbc version]
"To let" the second series is based in 1920's english society, the first series is victorian/edwardian.I love this series.

You may also like the "Berkley Square" series set in Edwardian England.

"Berkeley Square" is a good suggestion, as was the venerable "Upstairs, Downstairs" by the same stellar actresses who came up with House of Eliott -- the legendary Eileen Atkins and Jean Marsh.

It's hard to duplicate all the themes in this series, but a few suggestions other than the ones already mentioned:

"Mapp & Lucia" -- a campy romp through the early 1930's, by EF Benson, adapted in the mid-80s, and starring veteran actresses, Geraldine McEwan and Prunella Scales.

"Your Rang, M'Lord" -- no less campy sitcom, which rather broadly deals with this period. It's been described as Upstairs, Downstairs meets Mapp & Lucia, by some.

"Edward & Mrs. Simpson" -- ladies' fashions is one thing, but if you want a look at men's fashions in the '30s, there is no finer place to start than this beautifully produced series.

There are others, I'm sure.

watch Gosford Park - a movie not a series but stunning .... and with Eileen Atkins who wrote HoE as one of the main roles

Thanks for all these tips< I added them to Netflix.

Good luck with Netflix with upstairs Doenstairs, they had it, then made it unavailble and we still don't know if we will ever get it. Their aim is to go streaming and the best movies aren't on there. Call Custome Servise there and complain..maybe if they get enough complaints they will have to supply more dvd's. I don't like streaming at all.

"The Grand" is very good as well...lots of drama.

Love In a Cold Climate- two versions. First one is better but also longer - but not my knowledge avail on DVD.

And yes, yes, yes to Gosford Park - I have literally watched it 40 times.

reply

I second the Forsyte Saga - both seasons. Very good.

Also Downton Abbey is really good.

I know it's not the same time frame but I really liked Bleak House (the one with Gillian Anderson), Cranford, and Island At War (Island At War is set during WW2).

Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Wonderful Australian series currently showing on one of my cable PBS stations. Phyrne Fisher is a lady detective in the 1920's -- very emancipated, and the series costume designer has won the Australian equivalent of the American Emmy Award for costume design. You will LOVE the clothes and scenery. If you can't find it on any of your PBS channels, you can watch both Series 1 and 2 at AcornTV.com. The filming of Series 3 just finished up and I can't wait to see it. I have seen and loved all of the above suggested series as well.
