I didn't care for her either, she was always smug, bitchy, feminist, never admitted when she was wrong, thought she was better than Tim even though he was a good father and husband and supported the family. Nearly every sitcom wife since the early 90s and even earlier has been just like her, for example, the wives from The Cosby Show, Everybody Loves Raymond, Malcolm in the Middle, Modern Family, that's why I hardly watch any comedies later than the early 90s.

reply

ACTUALLY CLAIRE OF MODERN FAMILY PROVES HERSELF TO BE WAY MORE INSANE AND DAMAGED THAN PHIL REPEATEDLY ON THE SHOW...THEY ARE A GOOD COUPLE,VERY LITTLE OF THE ANTI-SPOUSE SHIT THAT DOMINATES MANY SITCOMS.

reply

I could understand her being mad at Tim sometimes as he was frequently inconsiderate and constantly screwed up the house, having said that Jill is a self-righteous high and mighty hypocrite (Tim can't yell at Mark for robbing his best friend yet she can jump down Brad's throat for not stopping his girlfriend from making a sandwich for him) and I can say that she got on my nerves more because Tim's antics were meant to be comic relief while her agenda was meant to be taken seriously.

[deleted]

She was a cold sexless ice queen who used sex as a weapon and never let tim touch her

reply

The whole incident where she made Tim tell Brad not to let his girlfriend make a sandwich for him because it was sexist was just ridiculous. Boyfriends and girlfriends do nice things for each other, Brad wasn't making her do it.

You know I always though feminism was about choice, yet feminists don't seem to be very tolerant when other women choose to be housewives.

reply

LMAO...BRAD WAS SO WRONG ON THAT EPISODE...REALLY SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT YOU.

reply

Nope she was typical of housewives on TV back then, very "Know it all" yet they don't work are doing some holier than thou study and being supported by the husbands they constantly ridicule and speak down to.

reply

I liked her. I notice a lot of people on here, don't, but I thought she was okay. The housewives I don't care for are Debra Barone, Carrie Heffernan, and Peggy Bundy

reply

Carrie wasn't a housewife and she certainly wasn't worse than Doug.

reply

She does seem to be kind of an awful person to Tim. I am just watching this show again for the first time in over 20 years. A perfect example of the issue I take with her character is from season 1. Compare Tim's friend vs Jill's friend in back to back episodes:

Tim's Friend Stu - Episode 14 "For Whom the Belch Tolls"
Jill's Friend Karen - Episode 15 "Forever Jung"

Sure Stu is annoying and childish and is disrupting Jill's planned family night of forcing her 3 boys and husband to watch something they hate. She berates Tim and hates Stu and finally guilts Tim to not really want to see his friend anymore. Sure part of it was Tim wanted the family life more than the old life, but that was his decision to make. Stu likes Jill and is very complementary to her and her family and life and treats her very friendly and respectfully. and yet Jill can't stand him and sticks her nose up at Tim over their friendship.

Compare this with Karen (feminist). She is legitimately nasty to Tim, mocks him in front of his family, pits him and Jill against each other for her own amusement, ridicules Tim's entire view of masculinity, and Jill joins in with her in the mocking and belittling. She is an extremely rude person to Tim and Jill takes no issue with it and doesn't like that Tim does not want her around. In fact Stu is never seen again but Karen is a recurring character.

reply

wow great obsevation

reply

I'm rewatching the show and I had no problem with Jill whatsoever until these episodes.

It's one thing to not like Stu's manners, but instead of demanding Tim to send his old friend away, how about actually telling the guy? He wasn't aware they suddenly had a problem with his behavior since they had previously tolerated it. Tim was also a jerk for dumping Stu like that. How about trying to find some common ground, like going to a game?

It's absolutely mindboggling they immediately followed this up with an episode that exposed Jill's hypocrisy. Tim makes clear her new friend doesn't make him feel comfortable, but instead of taking her somewhere else to hang out, she keeps inviting this stranger into their home and joins in mocking her husband. What on earth were the producers/writers thinking adding this character to the show? There was no use for a feminist character to counter Tim's remarks. He wasn't actually that sexist and Jill was very capable of putting him in his place.

reply

not a fan but I liked her.

reply

YES...SHE WAS MY FAVORITE CHARACTER ON THE SHOW.

reply

She was a standard housewife type for the period. Not many TV wives were nice or liked their husbands in the 90’s.

reply

Chris Titus, Bruce Campbell, and Faizon Love are right on the money: Sitcoms ain't funny, and never have been. At least not prior to cable

reply

Titus was funny at first and different. The last season was weird though.

Sitcoms are mostly a waste of time. Like eating a huge bowl of ice cream for dinner. When you’re done you still look for more food.

reply

She had her moments but they still made her two shrill (shrill Jill?) most of the time. For a few years they had some of the best husband and wife banter on TV but eventually the whole formula got really old. He'd piss her off, misconstrue Wilson's advice, she'd forgive him, next episode.

reply

Yeah and yet what was she bringing to the relationship? She kept studying. Tim brought home the money and did all the work. Tim tried despite failing over and over.

Wilson’s advice was never great either.

reply

Titus' show was hilarious though.
