Was this show appropriate for kids?

I was probably about 9 when this came out and I remember my mom would not let me watch it. So I am wondering, would it be appropriate for a 9 yr old to watch or was my mom overreacting?

THere was nothing inappropriate about this show. It was on nickelodeon. Sorry but your mom was overreacting lol

reply

Haha! As I look back, I figured she was, but at the time she was all serious about it. Funny. :)

The show was pretty much harmless although it was a departure for Nickelodeon at the time. I'll put it this way, matched up against the rest of the stuff they were airing in the early nineties this was as about as cutting edge as they ever got.

For example as far as I know it was the only show where one of the main characters had an alcohol problem. They also stretched the boundaries of teenage relationships as far as they could given that it was Nickelodeon we are talking about. I suppose in that was the reason the show was basically considered a flop by Nickelodeon. The show was created under the premise that Nickelodeon would be able to foster it's own teenage soap opera not unlike some of the successful teen soaps the major networks were running at the time.

However, because it aired on Nickelodeon, there were boundaries in place that they could not cross from a storyline perspective. These boundaries basically included nixing any storyline featuring relevant teen issues of the day that shows like "90210" were tackling on a weekly basis. This is probably also the reason that Nickelodeon has never again attempted to create another show in this genre. As I said from everything I've read about the show, it was basically considered a failed experiment.

Thanks for the detailed response. Yeah my mom would not have liked the alcohol story lines so I guess I understand now why she didn't let us watch it. She was pretty strict back then about what we watched, and I think it was easier to be strict. Now I bet it is hard to find shows that are appropriate for kids.

Yeah but it didn't glorify drinking or show anybody drinking. They just tried to make people aware of the negatives of it. Just like a PBS show would. I think it's positive to let people know the dangers of drugs or alcoholism, or teen suicide or any issue that can educate people.

I totally agree.

This show was the Canadian Saved By The Bell. Saved By The Bell might have even been "racier" than this one, but this only had one season (that I know of).

reply

The Brady Bunch had racier issues when you really think about it

Saved by the Bell had four seasons, or five if you count the one season of Good Morning, Miss Bliss, which featured most of the same chracters was shown in syndication as Saved by the Bell. It was a bit racier than Fiften.

As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster.

It's actually not hard at all. The various Disney channels air shows all day long that are totally appropriate for kids, with options for kids of all ages.

Back then, I considered it to be Degrassi Lite (the original that aired on PBS). It's funny that it was a light weight on Nick back then, considering Degrassi: The New Generation airs on Teen Nick.
