In season 2, a few characters we grew to love were gone. Olaf, Cyndi and Kelly have disappeared without a trace but we hear what happened to Jake and Theresa in the 1st episode of season 2.
shareWell, Olaf was an exchange student, and those are usually only at their foreign school for one year, so his absence made sense.

Yeah, Cyndi wouldn't have let the band spiral out of control the way it did if she'd stayed. Everyone looked like they were having fun when they were rocking out during the closing credits of the season 1 finale. Cyndi would've probably encouraged Billy to take drum lessons instead of just demanding Dylan throw him out of the band. The way his dad was always letting him down, Billy could've easily guilted him into not only paying for lessons, but buying him his own kit to practice on. :P
Kelly would have been a much better replacement villain for season 4 than Jennifer was.
As for Jake, the characters kept reminding us that he would be coming back. However, I'm not sure why he was gone again in season 4.
And also in season 2, we met Brooke's other sister, Amanda who was never mentioned in season 1.

And also in the beginning of the 1st episode of season 2 where Courtney told Ashley about her letter from Jake when he was in China with his mom for 6 weeks during season 2 and she told her that he thought everything was OK. He thought that Ashley and Matt were still together and that Ashley was still going to school. But we recall back in season 1 that Ashley broke up with Matt 2 full episodes before the season finale due to his drinking problem and that Ashley hasn't been going to school since the cheating incident.
